260 teams come to Jackson to participate in the Gus Macker basketball tournament

JACKSON, MI – The Gus Macker basketball tournament takes over the streets of downtown Jackson to welcome 260 teams.

On Saturday, July 22, the Gus Macker basketball tournament celebrates its fifth year in Jackson and 49th year overall. The tournament raises money for charities and local communities. Participants range from the age of eight and under to 50 years old.

The event hosts a number of different activities, such as a Mascot game and a Slam Dunk competition.

“The tournament started in 1974 in my parents driveway in Lowell, Michigan,” Owner Scott McNeal said.

“At the time, it was only 18 kids playing to win $18, and by 1985, after a Sports Illustrated article, it made us into a national phenomenon,” McNeal said.

“We travel to 25-30 cities across the country, we’re big in New Mexico, New York State, and Michigan,” McNeal said.
