Edmonton Oilers draft Asher Barnett with No. 131 selection

Date:

The Michigan hockey team continues to have incoming players picked in the 2025 NHL Draft.

With the third pick in the fifth round, freshman defenseman Asher Barnett heard his name called by the Edmonton Oilers as the No. 131 overall selection.

This past season, Barnett played for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program U18 Team. With eight goals and adding 14 assists, he was third on the USNTDP in points for defensemen.

Playing hard and making good decisions, Barnett is a natural leader. These leadership skills landed him the captain role for the bronze medal-winning Team USA at the IIHF World U18 Championship this spring. For a Wolverines’ squad that often struggled with defensive depth, Barnett’s skills could prove invaluable.

Barnett already carries a rapport with many of his teammates he will play with in Ann Arbor. On USNTDP this past season, he played with sophomore forward Will Horcoff, incoming freshman forward Cole McKinney and incoming freshman defenseman Drew Schock, all of whom were drafted earlier today.

As the sixth selection for Michigan, Barnett will continue to develop in Ann Arbor while the Oilers await his arrival to the NHL.
