This puzzle is starting to sound repetitive…
SUNDAY PUZZLE — Hello solvers! I’m happy to be back with another Sunday puzzle. As a side note, I got promoted to managing games editor, so I’m super excited to be leading games for the rest of the semester! Tricky Clues:
1A. “This Is Your Brain on Drugs” is a famous drug PSA from the 1980s. You might remember it compares your brain to an egg.
9A. “Racers’ wear” refers to BIBS, the cards with runners’ numbers attached to their jerseys. This was a sneaky plural; I don’t blame you if you missed the apostrophe’s location!
47A. “Network based in Ottawa” is CBC, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. The network broadcasts in both English and French!
64A. “Play award” refers to an OBIE, an honor for off-Broadway productions. Starting in 1956, the Obie Awards recognizes productions to this day.
2D. “Volleyball team, e.g.” refers to SEXTET, as in the number of players on a team. Lots of clueing options for this entry, but I thought this one would throw people off.
3D. “Actor Starr of ‘The Boys’” is ANTONY, famous for portraying Homelander. His character is easily one of the best parts of the show. The penultimate season ended on such an amazing cliffhanger. I cannot wait to see what happens next!
49D. “‘Jewel’ music holder” is a CD CASE. The names for these sorts of CD holders are ‘jewel cases.’
Today’s Theme:
This puzzle’s theme is revealed at 50-Across: “Scratched vinyl, as heard in this puzzle’s starred clues” refers to BROKEN RECORD, famous for skipping and looping. We hear the broken record ‘looping’ throughout our puzzle: 17A *”Get your news here!” is EXTRA EXTRA EXTRA, 22A *”Disavow any accusations!” is DENY DENY DENY, 31A *”Who do we have here…” is WELL WELL WELL, 41A *”Hands off!” is MINE MINE MINE and 60A *”And so on and so forth” is YADDA YADDA YADDA.
