It’s there, if you look carefully…
SUNDAY PUZZLE — Hello solvers! I’m really excited to share my theme with all of you today. It was a fun puzzle to make, so I hope that the solving is just as fun. Hope this puzzle kicks off a great week for you!
Tricky Clues:
57A. Three strikes and you’re out. Two? It gets murkier. This clue refers to REHIT, as in hit twice. I like bringing in sports terminology when I can, and this seemed like a perfect opportunity to.
66A. This clue refers to SEPAL. Sorry. I don’t know what this means either but you probably would if you were big into plants. I have a family friend who gardens and I’d imagine she’d get this one easily – can’t say the same for myself but I hope you can.
12D. I liked this clue, referring to TREESAP, but I see why it is tough to solve. It’s pretty vague. I like to think of both as the beauty of it but also maybe why it’s difficult. It allows room for imagination, but unfortunately the grid doesn’t.
32D. You can thank the puzzle’s theme and its precise requirements for this clue, referring to the word IEI. I had a hard time finding a clue for this word, and when in doubt – turn to nursery rhymes. (That’s a saying in the biz – don’t look it up.)
40D. This one is pretty tough, referring to SEALERS. Basecoats could be many things (my mind goes to nail polish) and nail polish doesn’t have a sealer as a basecoat. If your mind goes to nail polish you may have trouble too. If it goes to something like paint, hopefully this is a breeze.
Today’s Theme:
This theme was such a fun one to make. If you’ve done my puzzles before, you may have realized I’m a big fan of fitting idioms into my crosswords, and this one was no exception. You probably noticed the circles in the center of the puzzle. I hope that these resemble a C to you upon first glance. And the circle spots have something else in common, in addition to their characteristic shape. They all have I’s in them (besides the themed entry). This can be made sense of thanks to the revealing entry at 36-Across, SEEEYETOEYE. Once you figure this out, the shape of the precisely placed I’s should come together. I had a great time putting this together, and hope you enjoyed figuring it out as well. Happy solving!
