SAGINAW, MI — An early-morning shooting at a Saginaw apartment complex has left a man dead, about 400 feet from where a teen was fatally shot earlier this year.

About 3:10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 2, police responded to the reported shooting at 3103 Birch Park Drive within Birch Park Apartments. They arrived to find 43-year-old John A. Harris in front of the residence, already deceased from at least one gunshot wound.

Police have not arrested any suspects. They did not provide a suspect description or additional context.

They are asking anyone with information to call Detective Martin Blank at 989-759-1231 or, to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-422-5245.

Harris’ is the second shooting death to occur in the apartment complex this year. The evening of March 21, 19-year-old Jason L. Porterfield Jr. was shot in his head in front of 3013 Birch Park Drive. Porterfield died two days later after his family removed him from life support.

Police recovered 24 spent shell casings in the complex’s parking lot. They developed a suspect, 17-year-old Malique A. Cannon, and arrested him in September. He has since been charged with open murder and three firearm offenses.

Harris’ homicide is also the 17th to result from gunfire in Saginaw so far this year. Two more people have died from vehicular assaults. All the victims have been males.

There have been 39 nonfatal shootings in Saginaw as of Oct. 1. There was also an accidental shooting at Birch Park Apartments on July 31, in which a 23-year-old woman suffered an injury.
