The Michigan Daily Sunday Crossword

Find the right combination of location, weapon and suspect in this Sunday crossword inspired by a classic board game!

SUNDAY PUZZLEHey everyone, I’m stoked that I could figure out (pun intended) how to put this crossword together and I hope it made for an enjoyable solve! If you have any questions or comments about the puzzle, feel free to email me at nayman@umich.edu. I’d love to hear your feedback. If you have general thoughts, you can reach the entire games team at crosswords@umich.edu.

Tricky Clues:

5A: Both New York and Barcelona feature a GRID system where streets are lined up to intersect at right angles and make the city easier to navigate.

50A: Crypto-currency has been hogging all the attention recently, but FIAT currency refers to any money (like the U.S. dollar, euro or yen) that is issued by a government and not backed up by any precious metal.

9D: Coming from a furry South American mammal known for spitting, LLAMAWOOL is a popular luxury fabric known for being light, warm and soft.

26D: Anthropomorphic robot and professional trash-cleaner WALL-E is the eponymous star of my personal favorite Pixar movie, set in the year 2805.

44D: Bullets, pharaohs and carpenters are all species of ANTS. I could’ve picked any of the 15,700 named species to include in this clue but those three stood out as having cool names.

Today’s Theme:

Today’s theme is based on one of my personal favorite board games: CLUE. As mentioned in 55-Across, the goal of that game is to solve a MURDERMYSTERY with the first player to do so being named the winner. To do so one has to logically deduce the location, weapon, and suspect. All of those pieces of evidence can be found in this puzzle, with their clues surrounded by brackets. In this instance, MISSSCARLETT committed the murder using a CANDLESTICK in THEDININGROOM. I hope you were able to piece together the puzzle as a whole and find the mystery at its center.
