2024 Caldecott Medal-winning illustrator coming to Kalamazoo for meet-and-greet

KALAMAZOO, MI — Award-winning illustrator Vashti Harrison is coming to Kalamazoo.

Harrison will be a special guest at Kalamazoo Public Library‘s “First Saturday” event on Saturday, Nov. 2. The “First Saturday” events bring community members together for stories and crafts, according to the KPL website.

Harrison is the New York Times bestselling creator of “Big,” a story of fitting in, standing out and the beauty of joyful acceptance, according to Harrison’s website. The book won the 2024 Caldecott Medal, an award recognizing distinguished American picture books distributed by the American Library Association.

Harrison has also received a Coretta Scott King Book Award author honor and a Coretta Scott King Book Award illustrator honor, in addition to being a National Book Award finalist.

Harrison is also the creator of New York Times bestselling series “Little Leaders,” “Little Dreamers” and “Little Legends.”

Harrison illustrated New York Times bestsellers “Sulwe” by actress Lupita N’Yongo and “Hair Love” by Matthew A. Cherry. “Hair Love” was also made into an Academy Award-winning short film.

The meet-and-greet goes from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Northside Association for Community Development, 612 N. Park St., which is also temporarily serving as a library.

The event is free and open to the public. A library card is not required to attend.
