Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Vice Presidential Candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), has wooed students of the Korle-Bu Nursing and Midwifery Training College, Accra School of Hygiene and the Public Health Nursing School to vote massively for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as he touts achievements of the government in the health sector and Bawumia’s bold vision.
Addressing the students at a stakeholder engagement on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at the Korle-Bu NMTC in the Ablekuma South Constituency, Dr. Opoku Prempeh who once served as Minister for Education and Energy respectively recalled the achievements of the government, particularly the restoration of nursing trainee allowances that was canceled by the erstwhile Mahama-led NDC government.
“As you, yourselves, have always maintained, a delayed ‘allawa’ is much better than a cancelled allawa. We have restored your allawa and are fixing the delays…But John Mahama has told you he will never give you allawa and if, because of that, you decide to vote against him, you should go ahead. He doesn’t care…Is that how a leader should speak to his people who are making a legitimate demand?”, he said.
NAPO, as he is affectionately called, noted that not only has the government restored the trainee allowance but also implemented its flagship Agenda 111 programme where over 100 hospitals are being constructed in almost every district in the country to improve healthcare.
He said these hospitals, most of which have been completed awaiting commissioning, will provide jobs to the trainee nurses.
“When John Mahama cancelled your allawa, the excuse he gave was that he was going to use your allawa to build hospitals. Has he built any hospitals? No. But, we in the NPP have demonstrated clearly that it is possible to pay your allawa and still build over 100 hospitals to provide you ready jobs. We have also demonstrated that it is possible to pay your allawa and abolish the NDC’s 3-months pay policy for 3 years of work. Ultimately, we have shown that it is possible to pay your allawa and still keep the lights on.”
On the basis of the NPP’s laudable achievements in the health sector and more, Dr. Opoku Prempeh asked the trainee nurses to reward the party by voting massively for his boss, Dr. Bawumia, and all the NPP parliamentary candidates in order to protect these gains and secure a better future for them.
