The Michigan Daily Sunday Crossword

Take an adventure with this week’s puzzle!

SUNDAY PUZZLEHi everyone, welcome to my first Sunday crossword of the year! It has been a while since my last puzzle, so I am very happy to be back and excited to share this with you all! Hopefully, you all, like me, are enjoying this warm October weather while it lasts. If you have any questions or comments about the puzzle, feel free to email me at jknake@umich.edu. If you have general concerns, you can reach the entire games team at crosswords@umich.edu. Happy solving!

Tricky Clues:

26A. I am unfortunately not a huge fan of the NBA, mostly due to my Detroit Pistons being one of the worst teams in the league for more than a decade. However, that does not stop me from loving basketball as a sports fan in general, which is why I wanted to include one of the young stars of the league in this puzzle. The clue “Edwards of the Timberwolves, to fans,” refers to ANT, which is short for Anthony Edwards.

39A. This is one of my favorites in the puzzle. The clue “Follower of Marx?” refers to ISM. Hopefully, I was able to lead some of you astray with this one, but if not, I hope that you were able to enjoy the clue as much as I did.

53A. The clue “Deuce follower, perhaps” refers to ADIN. As a former high school tennis player, I found myself saying, “Ad in,” many times throughout my four years, so I figured this entry was a perfect opportunity to pay homage to one of my favorite sports. If you are an avid tennis player as well, this may have come to you easily, but otherwise, this one might have been a bit difficult.

30D. I love throwing slightly obscure geography references in my puzzles, and this one is no exception. The clue “Tiny South Pacific nation” refers to Nauru, one of the world’s smallest countries by both size and population and also one of my personal favorites.

48D. The clue “‘Happy Days’ mother, informally” refers to MRSC. I had heard of the show before creating this puzzle, but I had never watched it, leading me to learn something new with this clue. Big sitcom fans might be able to get this one easily, but for the younger solvers of this puzzle, this one may have caused you some trouble.

Today’s Theme:

This week’s theme is dedicated to those who love the outdoors – somewhere for which my love is beginning to grow rapidly. The theme of this puzzle is revealed by 28-Across, with NATIONALPARKS. I have recently decided that I want to try to visit each of them throughout my life, so each of the themed entries in this puzzle represents a park at the top of my list, with 18-Across being DEATHVALLEY, 47-Across being ROCKYMOUNTAIN and 62-Across being GRANDCANYON. I had hoped to include ZION as well as it is another park that I hope to visit soon, but I was not able to fit it in. Hopefully, you were all able to enjoy solving this adventure of a puzzle as much as I enjoyed creating it!
