Freshman guard Justin Pippen entering transfer portal

Date:

The Michigan men’s basketball team is still amid its March Madness run, but its first offseason domino has already fallen. Freshman guard Justin Pippen has entered the transfer portal according to 247 Sports’ Travis Branham.

Pippen appeared in 28 games for the Wolverines, averaging 1.6 points per game in a limited role. He started out the year missing games while recovering from a leg injury, and hasn’t travelled with the team in the postseason — both in the Big Ten and NCAA Tournaments — while in concussion protocol.

One of three freshman guards for Michigan, Pippen was likely looking to fight for a bigger role in the coming year in a crowded backcourt. Starting point guard junior Tre Donaldson has the opportunity to come back for another season, and the Wolverines are bringing in a combo guard Trey McKenney in next year’s recruiting class as well.

Pippen’s departure opens up some of that congestion, and is the first transfer portal move for Michigan. While still in the NCAA Tournament, the Wolverines’ future is already being looked at.
