Lilly Vallimont enters the transfer portal

Date:

After several successful seasons with the Michigan softball team, redshirt junior catcher Lilly Vallimont announced on X Tuesday that she was entering the transfer portal.

Vallimont has become a staple of the Wolverines’ lineup, starting all but one game in her three non-redshirt seasons. Whether it was launching timely hits or framing outside balls into the strike zone, Vallimont’s contributions were pivotal in Michigan’s back-to-back Big Ten Tournament championships in 2024 and 2025.

In 2026, Vallimont showed just how valuable she was to the Wolverines. She drastically improved her numbers, batting a respectable .280 with 11 home runs. Vallimont excelled at delivering timely extra-base hits, going yard seemingly every time Michigan needed a big hit. She came up clutch with a walk-off grand slam against Purdue, and also similarly launched the ball over the fences against Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament and against Kansas in the Norman Regional.

Vallimont’s influence went beyond the diamond, however. As a captain alongside junior left fielder Ella Stephenson, Vallimont’s voice and leadership anchored the Wolverines to their third straight NCAA regional appearance.

While returning veterans like junior outfielder Jenissa Conway, junior two-way player Erin Hoehn and Stephenson may fill the leadership void, the Wolverines will need to rely on younger talent to replace Vallimont.

Freshman catcher Sydney Hastings seems to be the most likely candidate, as she replaced Vallimont against Oklahoma in the Norman regional. Hastings has shown glimpses of promise, being one of just two freshmen to make sustained appearances in the NCAA tournament for Michigan. Vallimont leaves large shoes to fill, but Hastings’ talent may be just what the Wolverines need to replace their captain.

Vallimont’s consistency and experience will be highly coveted for any team in the nation. And without her, Michigan will need to emulate her invaluable presence.
