Michigan cancels Texas Tech volleyball game amid Sorsby drama

Date:

Late Monday evening, Michigan became the third school to alter its scheduling with Texas Tech athletics amid the fallout of Red Raiders quarterback Brendan Sorsby’s high-profile betting scandal.

The University athletic department cancelled the Michigan volleyball team’s Sept 18 nonconference game with Texas Tech, per Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports. The reputed cancellation is the Wolverines’ first schedule change in connection with the legal drama surrounding Sorsby’s eligibility to compete for Texas Tech in the 2026-2027 football season.

“(Michigan) plans to hold further discussions with its athletic staff on prohibiting contests against the Red Raiders, similar to Nebraska and Georgia,” Bellenger reported Monday on X.

Sorsby was denied eligibility after the NCAA determined he placed $90,000 in sports wagers over his collegiate career, including bets on his own team during his time as a backup quarterback for Indiana.

However, a Texas judge granted Sorsby an injunction reinstating his eligibility June 8, describing gambling addiction as a mental health issue and ruling that Sorsby will suffer a “probable, imminent and irreparable injury” if unable to play in the upcoming season.

“During that time in September and early October 2022, I placed small bets on sports, including bets on my own team,” Sorsby said in a court statement May 16. “These bets made me feel like I was supporting the team when I was not playing in games, much like fans betting on their hometown teams to win. It was a way to make me feel more connected to my team when I wasn’t playing. I always bet on Indiana to succeed.”

Bulldogs athletic director Josh Brooks and Cornhuskers athletic director Troy Dannen were among the many executives and coaches to publicly express their concerns with the ruling in the following days. Last week, Brooks and Dannen instructed their respective departments not to schedule Texas Tech athletics in the future.

After the Big Ten reportedly considered a similar blanket ban, Michigan responded by cancelling its volleyball game with the Red Raiders — the contest no longer appears on the MGoBlue schedule website.

“We had initial conversations with Texas Tech, but decided to go in a different direction with our volleyball schedule,” Wolverines associate athletic director David Ablauf told The Michigan Daily Wednesday.

Michigan coach Erin Virtue’s squad would have competed against Sorsby’s partner, Red Raiders opposite hitter Gretchen Sigman. After Sigman transferred from Cincinnati in December 2025, Sorsby — who played for the Bearcats in the 2025-2026 season — followed her to Lubbock, accepting a $5 million NIL deal in January.

Dellenger’s post came three hours after ESPN reported that Sorsby would leave to enter the NFL supplemental draft. Following the announcement, a joint statement by Texas Tech’s president and athletic director confirmed that Sorsby will not be a member of the football team in the fall.

Unlike his counterparts at Georgia and Nebraska, Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel has not publicly commented on the Sorsby situation or scheduling decision.
