Allegan man tried fighting fire in his house, but succumbed to smoke, firefighters say

ALLEGAN, MI — An Allegan man tried to extinguish a fire in his house, but then likely was overcome by smoke and did not escape, firefighters said.

Joel McDaniel, 56, died in the 5:50 a.m. fire in the 200 block of Russell Street in Allegan, authorities said.

Allegan Fire District Chief Nicholas Brink said fire crews responded to the fire early Friday, April 14 and found flames coming out of an upstairs window,

Fire investigators say the cause of the fire has not been determined, but they are looking at careless smoking as a possibility.

McDaniel’s mother and step-daughter also lived in the house and were able to escape. The fire is believed to have started in an upstairs bedroom belonging to McDaniel.

The step-daughter told investigators that, when she awoke because of the fire, McDaniel yelled for her to get him a fire extinguisher.

Somehow, she was able to get him an extinguisher, although the smoke was too heavy for her to get all way back upstairs. The step-daughter then retreated and helped the other woman get out of the house.

Brink said the evidence shows McDaniel appeared to be trying to escape through an upstairs window but did not make it. He likely was overcome by smoke, Brink said.

An autopsy is planned.
