Frita Batidos, a Cuban-inspired downtown eatery, has won Best Casual Dinner and Drinks for the second year in a row. Frida Batidos also claimed a second win this year for Best Burger. The restaurant primarily serves Cuban-inspired burgers and tropical milkshakes — or batidos — and features a full bar known for its spiked batidos and “fishbowl”-sized beverages.

Owner Eve Aronoff expressed her excitement to win in this category in an interview with The Michigan Daily, as the business originally opened without a liquor license.

“I think maybe originally, people didn’t think of us for our drinks,” Aronoff said. “It took a long time to get the word out that we are really passionate about these lush seasonal cocktails.”

Aronoff opened the restaurant in 2010, inspired by time she spent in Miami, surrounded by Cuban and Latin American culture. In 2019, Aronoff opened a second location in downtown Detroit.

“I spent a lot of time (in Miami),” Aronoff said. “As I got older, I just really fell in love with the whole culture and the ingredients. Then I was working towards becoming a chef, and it always stayed with me and (was) a big influence as I developed my style of cooking.”

The success of the restaurant has come with difficulties, including lines that go out the door during peak hours. Aronoff, however, is not discouraged.

“It’s a fun challenge every day,” Aronoff said. “You just want to rise to the occasion and we want people to be happy because it’s casual but we care a lot about the details, the food and the service.”

Next time you crave a casual dining experience and maybe a drink or two, try out Frita Batidos in Ann Arbor or Detroit.
