GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Calvin University has chosen a new president after a summerlong search.

The Calvin Board of Trustees unanimously approved Greg Elzinga, who had been serving as interim president, to be appointed as the university’s 13th president. University leaders said in a news release Monday, Oct. 21 that Elzinga demonstrated leadership, vision and commitment during a transitionary period.

“We are delighted to confirm Greg Elzinga as the next president of Calvin University,” said Bruce Los, chair of the board of trustees. “Greg’s experience, wisdom, and deep connection to the Calvin community, both in the U.S. and around the world, make him the right leader at this critical time.”

Elzinga will replace former president Wiebe Boer who abruptly resigned in February after being accused of sending inappropriate texts to a woman. Boer, who then sued Calvin over a breach of contract, said he did not deem the text messages as inappropriate. He later dropped the lawsuit.

Elzinga, the former vice president of advancement, served as the interim president following Boer’s resignation.

A presidential search committee spent the summer seeking feedback from students, faculty, staff and university leadership about the next president. The Calvin stakeholders repeatedly pointed to Elzinga’s leadership during his time as interim president.

Elzinga, a first generation college student with a background in faith-based global engagement, focused on expanding enrollment, fostering a campus culture and investing in infrastructure during his tenure.

“In this next season, we are focused on leveraging comprehensive enrollment growth, making disciplined investments in infrastructure, strengthening workplace culture, and fundraising,” he said in a statement. “Our shared strategy will drive us toward success and ensure that Calvin University continues to thrive and serve our community effectively.”
