Chi-Hi, Stanley-Boyd girls basketball grab No. 2 seeds in playoffs



The Chi-Hi and Stanley-Boyd girls basketball teams each earned a No. 2 seed in their respective playoff brackets, as announced by the WIAA on Sunday afternoon.

Both teams will open the playoffs at home on Friday, Feb. 27 in the regional semifinals. 

Chi-Hi (19-1) hosts Wausau West in their Division 1 playoff opener while Stanley-Boyd plays the winner of the Tuesday, Feb. 24 matchup between Cadott and Augusta in a Division 4 regional semifinal.

The Cardinals defeated Wausau West 57-39 on Dec. 29 at the Big Rivers Conference/Wisconsin Valley Conference Challenge in Wisconsin Rapids. D.C. Everest is the top seed in the sub-sectional and opens with Superior while No. 4 Hudson plays No. 5 Eau Claire Memorial and No. 6 Eau Claire North plays at No. 3 Marshfield. The winner of Chi-Hi’s matchup will play the winner of the Eau Claire North/Marshfield game on Saturday, Feb. 28 at the higher-seeded team’s site for a regional championship.

D.C. Everest (21-0) is the lone team to defeat the Cardinals this season, besting Chi-Hi in a battle of the unbeatens 46-23 on Jan. 20 at Chi-Hi.

Stanley-Boyd (14-6) also gets a bye through the opening round of the playoffs. The Orioles will host the winner of the matchup between the Hornets and Beavers. Stanley-Boyd swept both matchups against Cadott and also defeated Augusta 67-56 on Jan. 5. Fall Creek (19-2) is the top seed in the regional and faces the winner of No. 5 Mondovi and No. 4 Osseo-Fairchild on Feb. 27. The winner of those two Friday matchups will play at the higher-seeded team’s site on Saturday, Feb. 27.

Two other Chippewa County teams earned first-round home playoff as the McDonell Macks (7-14) and Bloomer Blackhawks (13-7) will start the postseason in their home gym. McDonell as a No. 4 seed will host No. 5 Bruce on Tuesday, Feb. 27. The winner will advance to face top-seeded Clayton.

The Macks and Red Raiders also faced off in the opening round of the postseason last year as McDonell defeated Bruce 43-30.

No. 4 seed Bloomer will face No. 5 seeded Altoona in their Division 3 playoff opener.

The county’s other three teams will begin the playoffs on the road. Cadott (3-18) as a No. 6 seed plays at No. 3 Augusta in Division 5 while No. 7 Cornell (6-13) plays at No. 2 Owen-Withee and No. 8 Lake Holcombe (2-18) is at top-seeded Flambeau.  In the same regional, No. 3 Thorp (11-9) hosts No. 6 Rib Lake while No. 5 Gilman (4-15) is at No. 4 Prentice.
