The Michigan Daily Sunday Crossword

SUNDAY PUZZLEHappy Sunday everyone and welcome back to The Michigan Daily Games section! This is my first Sunday puzzle of the semester, so I hope you enjoy it! Here is a shameless plug: I have a mini crossword published every Monday and you should check them out (and everyone else’s lovely puzzles as well)! As always, if you have any questions, spot any errors or want to give me a pat on the back, you can reach me at maemarsh@umich.edu. If you have any general questions or concerns, reach out to crosswords@umich.edu. Happy solving!

Tricky Clues:

17A. The clue “Very little” refers to ADAB. I originally wanted to try to clue this to reference the dance move that crazed the nation around 2015, but unfortunately, I had to drop that endeavor. I think that 17A is on the trickier side since the clue gives you “very little,” which could refer to a few different things.

18A. The clue “Not your average Joe?” is referring to LATTE. I absolutely adore solving entries with a bit of misdirection, which is exactly what this clue does. I find it pretty clever, but I also know that if I were the one solving this clue, I would have to sit with it for a minute before being able to solve it.

24A. The clue “Nicht alt” refers to NEU. I originally did not have this as a “tricky clue” until I realized it would be on the more difficult side for someone who does not speak German at all. The clue translates to “not old,” and the entry is, as you could guess, “NEW.” Besides the language barrier, I feel like it is a pretty simple clue.

11D. The clue “Goes over the line?” is referring to REHEARSES. I thought this was a super clever way to phrase the clue, and as always a little bit of misdirection has never hurt anyone (hopefully).

54D. The clue “Start of the “Yellow Submarine” chorus” refers to WEALL. While The Beatles are well known, I feel like it is difficult to know the specific lyrics of a song based on little information, which is why I decided to include 54D in the tricky clues! I recently rewatched “Yesterday,” which is a great movie. I highly recommend it!

Today’s Theme:

In celebration (or anxious anticipation, in my case) of this upcoming Tuesday, I decided to center the puzzle around the election; it might be the political science major in me, who knows. While I did not manage to get my hands on the wolf IVOTEDSTICKER (absentee voter) – “Proof of civic duty, often worn on a shirt” — I was able to avoid the major lines outside of the University of Michigan Museum of Art on the “Early November occasion in the United States,” or ELECTION DAY. “Campaign to encourage people to the polls” refers to 20A, or GETOUTTHEVOTE, and “Independent of party ties” leads one to the answer NONPARTISAN. I hope you all exercised your right to vote, and a special shoutout to those who will be watching the news all night.
