WASHINGTON DC – Twelve Michigan schools are among the several hundred across the country recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2024.
A recognition established in 1982, the Blue Ribbon program highlights public and private elementary, middle, and high schools in one of two areas: Overall academic performance or achievement in closing gaps among different groups of students.
The schools in Michigan include:
- Chandler Woods Charter Academy in Belmont
- Hill Elementary School in Davison
- Dearborn STEM Middle School in Dearborn Heights
- Pembroke Academy in Detroit
- Rosy Mound Elementary School in Grand Haven
- Hughes Elementary School in Marshall
- Moraine Elementary School in Northville
- Pellston Elementary School in Pellston
- Meadow Ridge Elementary Schools in Rockford
- Handley Elementary School in Saginaw
- Lake Hills Elementary School in Spring Lake
- Hamilton Elementary School in Troy
The recognized schools serve as models of effective and innovative teaching practices and receive an award flag to be displayed at schools’ entryways or on a flagpole, according to a news release.
The U.S. Department of Education recognizes schools based on student performance data, including assessment results, student subgroup performance and graduation rate.
“The National Blue Ribbon Schools Award is a testament to the exceptional achievements of students and educators at each of these schools,” U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said in a statement. “The 2024 National Blue Ribbon Schools are raising the bar for our nation’s students, serving as models for effective teaching and intentional collaboration in their schools and communities.”
According to the federal agency, the 356 Blue Ribbon schools selected this year also share standards that address clear instructional visions, robust professional development among staff, and collaboration between educators, communities, and families.
Each nominated school submits an application describing its school culture, programs, assessments, practices, leadership, and community involvement. Up to 420 schools can be nominated annually.
