Eric Jon Thomas | News, Sports, Jobs

MARQUETTE, MI – Eric Jon Thomas, age 48, of Marquette, passed away Wednesday, January 18th, 2023, at UP Health System – Marquette, surrounded by his loving family.

Born September 9th, 1974, in Alpena, Michigan, a son of Theodore and Janet (Myers) Thomas, Eric was raised in South Marquette, where he grew up playing hockey and hanging out with the South Marquette crew. He spent many hours skating on the ice rink at Hurley Field. He would race home from school to be the first one on the ice. His family said he’d stay there from sun up to sun down if he could. Eric attended Fisher Elementary School, Bothwell Middle School, and Marquette Senior High School before graduating from Bi-County High School in 1992. He attended ITT Technical Institute for a time before returning to Marquette to make his career choice as a boilermaker. He began his apprenticeship in 1998 and around this time welcomed his daughter, Callie, who was the light of his life. Eric was later employed with his Uncle David at Discount Vacuum.

Eric enjoyed fishing on Lake Superior in his younger years and loved camping around the U.P. He enjoyed playing yard games, challenging games of cribbage, loved true crime stories, and was a die-hard Detroit Red Wings fan. He enjoyed playing darts, belonged to several dart leagues, and participated in local tournaments, even taking first place in the Michigan State Dart League Tournament. Eric possessed a great sense of humor that earned him a reputation as the life of the party. To his nieces and nephews he was lovingly known as Crazy Uncle Eric. He was funny and one of a kind. For years he announced games at Hurley Field, keeping the folks laughing with his humorous insights. Generous with his time, Eric was always ready to lend a helping hand whenever something needed fixing or someone needed help. He cared deeply about his family and friends.

Eric was a member of Boilermakers Local 169, the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, and Jopling Post 44 of the American Legion.

Eric is survived by his daughter, Callie Thomas; mother, Janet (Drew) Forslund; brothers, Jeff (Alison) Thomas, Shayne (Mandie) Treloar, and Anthony Treloar; nieces and nephews, Clayre, Hallie, Evan, Conner and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ted Thomas and his paternal and maternal grandparents.

A celebration of life will be held at the Marquette American Legion on Sunday, January 22nd, from 12 noon until 4:00 pm.
