Editor’s note: The Michigan Daily Editorial Board has also provided endorsements for other races on the Ann Arbor ballot this November. You can find them all here.
Washtenaw County houses three Michigan State Legislature seats, but Rep. Jason Morgan of the 23rd District represents the largest subset of the Ann Arbor population. Elected for the first time in 2022, Morgan is running for reelection against Republican David Stamp and Green Party candidate Christina Marudas. A lack of available campaign materials for these two candidates is the simple reason as to why this Editorial Board endorses Morgan, but Morgan’s record and persona speak for themselves and deserve our praise and support.
Morgan, a graduate of the Ford School of Public Policy, was Washtenaw County’s first LGBTQ+ chair of the Board of Commissioners and has served in a variety of leadership positions across the county. He has worked in the offices of members of U.S. Congress and as constituent services director for Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson. In just his first term in the legislature, Morgan has been a champion for marriage equality, transportation, climate justice and the economy in Washtenaw County and in the state of Michigan.
Morgan is also highly involved in and admired by the Ann Arbor and University of Michigan campus communities, making himself present at various political and social events and taking the time to frequently meet with his constituents. At only 35 years old, Morgan’s youth, progressive drive and commitment to the people of Ann Arbor is commendable and proves his aptitude to continue holding his office. With the Michigan Legislature up for grabs this coming November, it is crucial that a figure like Morgan remains in office and continues representing U-M students and members of the Ann Arbor community. The Michigan Daily Editorial Board endorses Jason Morgan for the 23rd District of the Michigan Legislature for these reasons.
