DETROIT – Google’s Code Next program works with high schoolers to cultivate the next generation of Black, Latinx and Indigenous tech leaders. Nando Felten , Community manager Google Code Next, joins MITech TV to talk about the program he runs in Detroit.

• STEM and Digital Transformation: The importance of early access to STEM resources, not only for developing cybersecurity skills but also for retention and job security, especially in Michigan’s tech ecosystem.
• Retention of STEM Graduates: 45% of our STEM graduates leave Michigan within two years. I’ll highlight how expanding cybersecurity job opportunities can help reverse this trend, keeping more talent local.
• Diversity and Equity in Cybersecurity: I’ll discuss the projected $3 billion wage gap for Black workers in Detroit by 2030, and how increasing diversity and inclusion in tech, especially in cybersecurity, is a key solution.
• Excellence in Education: As I mentioned during my panel with the Detroit Chamber of Commerce, teaching excellence is vital. In cybersecurity, practical, hands-on skills are essential to building a resilient workforce.
