Greater Bay 11s must rebound from first loss at Little League state tourney

RICHMOND, MI – The first cut is always a deep one.

But Greater Bay Little League is already on the mend.

Greater Bay suffered a 13-1 loss to Taylor North in Round 1 of the Little League baseball state tournament for ages 11-and-under, absorbing its first setback along the tournament trail.

But the Bay County-based squad is eager to respond when it returns to Richmond Little League to face Grand Rapids Southern in the second of three pool-play contests. The game is set for 11 a.m. Saturday.

UPDATED Little League 11-and-under state tournament pairings, results

Taylor North had too much firepower for Greater Bay in its state tourney debut Friday. The game was a 0-0 deadlock until Taylor North plated six runs in the third inning then added seven more in the fourth.

“The kids know we can hit better than we showed today and they want to bounce back after taking the loss,” Greater Bay coach Zack Asel said. “It stung because we knew they were going to be a tough team, and we hung with them through three before we let the wheels fall off.”

Greater Bay scored its lone run in the third inning when Isaiah Jones drew a walk, advanced to third on a groundout then dashed home on an RBI grounder by Carter Deitlein.

Cayden Prime tallied the lone hit in the contest for Greater Bay.

Taylor North capitalized on nine hits and 11 walks, and its defense shined with a game-ending double play.

Greater Bay needs a top-4 finish in its six-team pool to advance to single-elimination play. It faces Grand Rapids Southern today then South Portage at 4 p.m. Sunday.
