Rock out in today’s puzzle!

SUNDAY PUZZLE — Fall is finally beginning to set in it seems. The trees are changing color, pumpkin products are filling stores and I am sneezing up a storm thanks to my allergies to goldenrod and ragweed.  This means I can start busting out the sweatshirts and change to my fall playlists! Settle in, get a hot cup of cider and if you have any questions, comments or concerns email milesand@umich.edu or crosswords@umich.edu. Happy solving!

Tricky Clues:

31A. The clue “Salty calls” refers to AHOY. For those of you who may have had some trouble with this it is a reference to pirates who stereotypically say ahoy to one another.

37A. The clue “Gaelic tongue” is a tongue-and-cheek way to refer to ERSE. Erse is a name for the Gaelic language, usually referring to the one spoken in Scotland.

40A. “Two-handed basketball attempts” refers to SETSHOTS. Set shots are typically taken from range by taller players because they do not have to jump as much to get arc on their shot attempts.

7D. “Hypothetical technology achieving human-level capabilities, for short” refers to AGI. AGI, or artificial general intelligence, is a science-fiction version of artificial intelligence that attempts to match or surpass human cognitive intelligence across a wide range of tasks.

24D. “British blockheads” is referring to PRATS. This is a slang term from England typically used to call someone a buffoon or fool after some sort of mistake.

Today’s Theme:

With fall coming along, I have switched to listening to almost entirely grunge music, so I decided to use this as inspiration for my theme. 16-Across (Nirvana frontman) is referring to Kurt Cobain, 9-Down (Pearl Jam lyricist) is referring to Eddie Vedder and 23-Down (Alice in Chains lead) is referring to Layne Staley all three of these musicians are frontmen for some of the best grunge bands of the 90s. These lead singers help answer 52-Across (What the grunge icons 16-Across, 9-Down, and 23-Down made up in early 90s Seattle). All three of these bands formed in Seattle and are an incredibly important part of music history. Sadly I was not able to fit Chris Cornell into the grid this time, but hey, maybe he will sneak into one of my future puzzles.
