Last week, we wrote that the campus must mobilize in the face of the University of Michigan’s decision to cut its diversity, equity and inclusion programs. In the days since, the need to protest has only grown clearer. University President Santa Ono and the University Board of Regents continue to prove that they don’t have U-M students’ best interests at heart, and with President Donald Trump in the White House, the consequences of their misgovernance will only become more severe for the U-M community.
Ono and the Board capitulated on DEI, and they’re capitulating as the federal government revokes the visas of our fellow Wolverines. They won’t be called to action by silence.
If there was ever a time to protest, it’s now. Come to the Diag at 5 pm on Thursday, April 10, to voice your discontent with the U-M administration. The Black Student Union is leading a demonstration to resist University repression, and it deserves the support of the broader student body. Show up, know your rights and make it clear to Ono and the Board that Wolverines won’t stand for DEI cuts, the deportation of our classmates and a crackdown on our rights. Make the University hear loud and clear that the leaders and the best don’t bow down to authoritarianism.
