After the exodus of many of the Michigan hockey team’s skaters, the Wolverines have numerous roster spots to fill. But recently, Michigan has begun to land portal prospects to do so.
Announcing his commitment via Instagram Tuesday, Cornell defenseman Ben Robertson will transfer to the Wolverines. Robertson is Michigan’s second commitment of the 2025 transfer portal cycle, following the recent commitment of forward Jayden Perron.
In two seasons with the Big Red, Robertson was productive. In 71 career games, he added 38 points as an essential part of Cornell’s defensive identity. He showed up when it mattered most, registering two assists in the Big Red’s upset win over Michigan State in the NCAA Tournament.
As a two-way defenseman, Robertson brings the Wolverines much-needed offensive prowess to a defensive group that struggled to produce offensively. Additionally, Michigan has lost three of its top defensemen, leaving a large gap in its lines and in experience. Robertson will fill multiple immediate needs, as a lineup mainstay, an offensive threat and as an experienced player.
As the Wolverines’ second transfer, Robertson is just one piece of a class that will continue to be built. But with the experience and offensive Robertson has, he figures to be an important part of Michigan’s identity next season.
