With the loss of assistant coach Ty Neal, head coach Tracy Smith wasted no time in attracting more talent to the Michigan baseball coaching staff. After adding Adam Cornwell as Recruiting and Player Development Assistant, the Wolverines announced their decision on X on Friday to hire Andrew Stone as an assistant coach.
Coming off his fourth season coaching Division I baseball at Michigan State, Stone has had plenty of experience working with high-level players. After making the change from volunteer to assistant coach in 2024, Stone served as the Spartans’ infielder and hitting coach as well as the first base coach.
Prior to his work in East Lansing, Stone was a coach at the Division III level at Kalamazoo. There he aided in both building the team as a recruiting coordinator as well as building up players through his work as an assistant coach. With his help in 2021, the Hornets’ offense exploded, recording the most runs, RBIs, doubles, triples and home runs in school history.
Stone has also been in his players’ shoes, spending five years playing at Western Michigan. There, Stone showed off that he’s walked the walk, recording a career .304 batting average as well as obtaining a .402 on-base percentage.
With promising young talent waiting to achieve their full potential, Stone’s addition comes at the right time for Michigan. Working his way through the ranks, Stone has proved that he knows what it takes to lift a team to the next level — a task the Wolverines are ready for him to take on.
