{"id":1186,"date":"2025-05-07T05:03:35","date_gmt":"2025-05-07T05:03:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2025\/05\/07\/postdoctoral-students-at-umich-file-for-union-recognition\/"},"modified":"2025-05-07T05:03:39","modified_gmt":"2025-05-07T05:03:39","slug":"postdoctoral-students-at-umich-file-for-union-recognition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2025\/05\/07\/postdoctoral-students-at-umich-file-for-union-recognition\/","title":{"rendered":"Postdoctoral students at UMich file for union recognition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/linktr.ee\/umpro\">University of Michigan Postdoctoral Researchers\u2019 Organization<\/a>, an organization <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1BhNd8MF6YGI6QZpMSxx4PRLS3iH1IKrHO6EhpTkm6Qg\/edit?tab=t.0#heading=h.h8vs1h6isgt9\">representing<\/a> over half of the University\u2019s 1500 postdoctoral students, submitted a petition Tuesday afternoon for union recognition outside of the Rackham building.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>UM-PRO wrote in an email to The Michigan Daily that this petition is both a bid for recognition as well as for financial protection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are making two demands in our petition,\u201d UM-PRO wrote. \u201cOne, that UM-PRO is quickly recognized as a union by the University so that we can begin good faith negotiations towards a standard contract. Two, that the University guarantees financial protections for Postdocs who lose funding due to federal cuts, effective immediately.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In an email to The Daily, University spokesperson Kay Jarvis wrote UM-PRO would undergo the <a href=\"https:\/\/record.umich.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/200625_BoR_LaborRecognition.pdf\">standard process<\/a> of bargaining once the University is officially contacted by the organization.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThe Board of Regents adopted the Board Resolution Regarding Employer Neutrality, Cooperative Determination and Recognition of Bargaining Units, and Notification of Agreements in June of 2020,\u201d Jarvis wrote. \u201cThis resolution sets forth the process for determination and recognition of bargaining units on campus and has been used multiple times since its inception. At this time we have not been contacted by UM-PRO, but we would follow the process laid out in the resolution for any proposal of a bargaining unit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an email to The Daily, UM-PRO organizer Joe Mirabelli, a postdoctoral biomedical engineering research fellow, wrote that they hope to gain protection from federal funding cuts and the potential threats to job security and working conditions they pose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUniversity of Michigan Postdocs are the backbone of this university\u2019s research operation,\u201d Mirabelli wrote. \u201cWe keep labs running, mentor grad students, and perform cutting-edge research \u2026 But with Trump in office, all of that is under threat, and the only way we can keep our research secure and our colleagues safe is to come together.
