{"id":2221,"date":"2025-08-04T16:49:06","date_gmt":"2025-08-04T16:49:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2025\/08\/04\/how-evitas-james-olivas-and-rachel-zegler-became-a-west-end-power-couple\/"},"modified":"2025-08-04T16:49:07","modified_gmt":"2025-08-04T16:49:07","slug":"how-evitas-james-olivas-and-rachel-zegler-became-a-west-end-power-couple","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2025\/08\/04\/how-evitas-james-olivas-and-rachel-zegler-became-a-west-end-power-couple\/","title":{"rendered":"How &#8216;Evita&#8217;s James Olivas and Rachel Zegler Became a West End Power Couple"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tNearly three decades ago, James Olivas\u2019 mother and father met during a production of Andrew Lloyd Webber\u2019s political musical <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/evita\/\" id=\"auto-tag_evita_1\" data-tag=\"evita\">Evita<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s a fun little coincidence that we have going on,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/theater-0\/\">theater<\/a> star tells <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>. \u201cAnd it makes me doing the show now especially exciting for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAs if by fate, Olivas now finds himself as one of three leads in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/west-end\">West End<\/a> production of <em>Evita <\/em>that\u2019s taken London by storm since mid-June: he plays husband to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/rachel-zegler\">Rachel Zegler<\/a>\u2018s Eva Per\u00f3n, Argentine president Juan Per\u00f3n, who rose to power in 1946.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDirector Jamie Lloyd \u2014\u00a0best known for his Tony-winning <em>Sunset Boulevard <\/em>revival as well as the Tom Holland-starring <em>Romeo and Juliet <\/em>\u2014 breathes new life into the 47-year-old Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice musical with a sharp, sexy take on Eva\u2019s life and career. It tackles head-on the couple\u2019s climb up the political ladder, beginning with a 15-year-old Eva as she sets about to leave behind a life of poverty, and culminates in the birth of Peronism, a nationalist ideology and movement that continues to shape Argentina to this day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<em>West Side Story <\/em>star Zegler shines as the actress-turned-First Lady of Argentina, beloved by the working class, whose tragic death from cancer at just 33 devastated a nation. She takes center stage alongside fellow Americans Olivas and Diego Andres Rodriguez, playing Che, a cynical member of the public intent on exposing Eva as a fraud. Che\u2019s fixation is obsessive as he attempts to point out the disastrous results of Juan Per\u00f3n\u2019s policies: its treasury is bankrupt, a once-thriving beef industry is wilting, and critics of the regime are muzzled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cWe had this idea of this authoritarian politician, some version of a scary, moustachioed man very far away that presents as evil,\u201d Olivas says about his conversations with Lloyd and music director Alan Williams about the Juan Per\u00f3n they wanted to showcase. \u201cBut this is 2025, and that is not the state of politics. Through Per\u00f3n, we are trying to portray a version of a politician that is extremely engaging and very charming \u2014\u00a0that people watch and think, \u2018I can get a beer with this person,\u2019 or, \u2018I might even be attracted to this person.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe 28-year-old, a Mexican American, whose family split their time between Texas and California growing up, continues: \u201cWe have politicians that are very good at winning popular support and still implementing very dangerous policies and legislation that\u2019s very bad for their constituents. I think it is far more insidious than a lot of people recognize. So this version of the show, I think, is very relevant for Western audiences in 2025.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   size-large alignnone lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:1920px\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  \">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((1080\/1920)*100%);\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption  lrv-u-padding-tb-025\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"a-font-secondary-s lrv-u-margin-r-025\">Olivas, 28, plays Argentine president Juan Per\u00f3n.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"a-font-accent-uppercase-xs lrv-u-color-grey-dark\">Marc Brenner<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThis suave model of Per\u00f3n is achieved, in part, thanks to Olivas\u2019 impressive physique: broad, tall and strong, he towers over Zegler on stage, donning a crisp, uncreased shirt and braces with quiet authority. Eight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/west-end\/\" id=\"auto-tag_west-end_1\" data-tag=\"west-end\">West End<\/a> shows a week will get you in shape \u2014\u00a0there\u2019s no doubt about that \u2014\u00a0but Lloyd takes it up a notch by having his entire production set across a stage-spanning staircase. \u201cIt is beautifully brutal,\u201d Olivas tells <em>THR<\/em>. \u201cFabian Aloise is such a visionary choreographer and it\u2019s some of the most amazing dancing I\u2019ve ever seen\u2026 [But] these platforms are unforgiving; people get injured, strain things and throw muscles out. You have to live like an athlete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOlivas is well-trained, having graduated from UCLA with a degree in theater. But the stage hadn\u2019t always been the plan. His parents hoped he\u2019d follow in the footsteps of his father, who has a PhD in mechanical materials engineering. \u201cTo have a very reliable source of income was kind of the understanding,\u201d Olivas explains, \u201cas is [the tradition] in a Mexican American household.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAfter continuous sports injuries, Olivas had to find something else to keep him busy. \u201cI\u2019d grown up playing guitar and trumpet, so I had a bit of a musical background, but being on stage was still very new to me,\u201d he says about his first foray into theater. \u201cAnd I ended up falling in love with the show and falling in love with performing. That\u2019s where the bug got me, and it was a snowball effect after that.\u201d (Luckily, his parents are \u201cextremely\u201d supportive.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBefore landing a major role in <em>Evita<\/em>, the actor had just finished a stint in L.A.\u2019s Deaf West Theatre company, a non-profit arts organization that hires deaf and hard-of-hearing people to make up half of their casts. Then, while casting, this show got some star power of its own: 24-year-old Zegler, who played Maria in Steven Spielberg\u2019s <em>West Side Story<\/em> and recently led <em>The Hunger Games: A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes<\/em> and Disney\u2019s live-action <em>Snow White<\/em>, came aboard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cIt was our [Olivas and Rodriguez] first time in the U.K., and she was taking us on tours through the city,\u201d Olivas says about his relationship with his on-stage wife. \u201cShe has been so warm and and welcoming. Rachel really came into this with the idea that she wanted to be stellar. And she has been that every step of the way, all throughout rehearsals. She\u2019s always the hardest worker in the room and I cannot be prouder of her for getting the response [she has]. It\u2019s so rightfully deserved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe conversation turns to backlash Zegler has received in recent months following the release of <em>Snow White<\/em> and in her pro-Palestine activism. Even as <em>Evita <\/em>kicked off, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/lifestyle\/arts\/rachel-zegler-london-palladium-balcony-evita-theater-lloyd-1236295616\/\">the Latina actress garnered criticism for a portion of the show<\/a> where Lloyd has her leave the stage to perform outside on the Palladium balcony for Londoners on the streets below (hundreds now gather on Soho\u2019s Argyll Street each night to see her sing showstopper \u201cDon\u2019t Cry For Me, Argentina\u201d). The audience inside the theater is left with a beautifully orchestrated livestream \u2014 but a small number of people still complained about paying hundreds of pounds only to miss out on the number.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOlivas rails against Zegler\u2019s haters. \u201cI think Rachel became very notorious prior to the show. In very similar ways to Eva Per\u00f3n, she was loved and hated,\u201d he says. \u201cPrior to coming to London, my understanding of her was that she was being dogpiled on a little bit by the media\u2026 I did some actual research, like, \u2018What is this scandal? What are the big controversies?\u2019 and found that there\u2019s nothing of merit. It\u2019s people just choosing to be angry at her because she is a woman of color, and she is young, an easy target.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   size-large alignnone lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:1920px\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  \">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((1080\/1920)*100%);\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-hollywoodreporter-2021\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/FotoJet-2025-07-31T122050.371.jpg?w=1920\" alt=\"\" data-lazy-srcset=\"\" data-lazy-sizes=\"\" height=\"1080\" width=\"1920\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption  lrv-u-padding-tb-025\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"a-font-secondary-s lrv-u-margin-r-025\">Zegler departs the stage and performs via livestream for a portion of \u2018Evita.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"a-font-accent-uppercase-xs lrv-u-color-grey-dark\">Marc Brenner<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tRegarding Zegler\u2019s<em> Evita<\/em> balcony performance, Olivas says the actress has been unfairly targeted: \u201cEven in her press run for <em>Snow White<\/em>, [people were] saying, \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/rachel-zegler\/\" id=\"auto-tag_rachel-zegler_1\" data-tag=\"rachel-zegler\">Rachel Zegler<\/a> hates traditional Snow White, so she changed it, and she doesn\u2019t want a prince!\u2019 I think it speaks to people\u2019s ignorance\u2026 Do you think that she\u2019s the writer? Do you think she\u2019s the director? She\u2019s an actor, she was given lines, she was given a job. And same thing in this production. [They say], \u2018How could Rachel Zegler do this to paying customers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHe describes the uproar as \u201csuch manufactured outrage,\u201d and says most comments were coming from those who would never and will never actually see the show. \u201cIt was this game of telephone that was never rooted in truth \u2014\u00a0there\u2019s not been a single person that has come to see the show that has anything less than<em> loved<\/em> what that moment is in the theater and how it reads outside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOlivas is right \u2014\u00a0it\u2019s an expertly-crafted segment of Lloyd\u2019s production, masterfully executed by Zegler and captures perfectly the power that Eva Per\u00f3n had over her own people. \u201cHow people feel about her, ultimately, is extremely empowering to a lot of people,\u201d he says of why <em>Evita <\/em>resonates. \u201cThe case of this woman not coming from means, and through sheer determination and willpower was able to climb her way to becoming what she was at the time: the most famous woman in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAs buzz continues to swarm around the West End\u2019s hottest summer production, Olivas describes working on a Jamie Lloyd set as \u201can actor\u2019s dream.\u201d He\u2019s loved getting to know London, though has been surprised to see some rowdy audiences over the 16-week-run (the American was warned plenty on how well, usually, Brits follow proper theater etiquette). Some of his favorite moments have come as he is stopped by fans at the stage door or on the tube home. \u201cYou have a lot of the Latino community flying over because this is such a significant moment of representation for them,\u201d he tells <em>THR<\/em>. \u201cIt really means a lot when you have [them] seeing the show, because they\u2019re so giving. The U.K., they won\u2019t show that they\u2019re upset.
