{"id":2554,"date":"2025-09-01T10:49:27","date_gmt":"2025-09-01T10:49:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2025\/09\/01\/sofia-coppolas-marie-antoinette-costumes-inspired-by-box-of-macarons\/"},"modified":"2025-09-01T10:49:27","modified_gmt":"2025-09-01T10:49:27","slug":"sofia-coppolas-marie-antoinette-costumes-inspired-by-box-of-macarons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2025\/09\/01\/sofia-coppolas-marie-antoinette-costumes-inspired-by-box-of-macarons\/","title":{"rendered":"Sofia Coppola\u2019s \u2019Marie Antoinette\u2019 Costumes Inspired by Box of Macarons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAs Oscar winning costume designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/milena-canonero\/\" id=\"auto-tag_milena-canonero_1\" data-tag=\"milena-canonero\">Milena Canonero<\/a> faced the tall task of creating the looks for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/sofia-coppola\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sofia-coppola_1\" data-tag=\"sofia-coppola\">Sofia Coppola<\/a>\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/marie-antoinette\/\" id=\"auto-tag_marie-antoinette_1\" data-tag=\"marie-antoinette\">Marie Antoinette<\/a><\/em>, the filmmaker happened to arrive in Italy with a gift from France.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cWe decided to make own costumes, and not rent them. We made them in a workshop that we set up in Rome,\u201d Canonero recalled on Friday during a Cartier masterclass conversation presented during the Venice Film Festival. \u201cSofia came to visit and arrived with an enormous box of macarons. Everybody knows them now, but in those days they were quite new, especially in Italy. In a very gentle way, she did not say that it was going to be the palette, but rather, \u2018I really like these colors.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tCanonero got the hint and used those colors as a \u201cprincipal focus\u201d for the entire 2006 period piece starring Kirsten Dunst in the title role as France\u2019s rebellious queen. \u201cIn the macaron, you go from very pale pastel to dark chocolate to noir, black. I had the whole palette in front of me and it was a good idea,\u201d she added. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<p><div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"H-glpqeH8C8\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"A Venezia Canonero, Sofia Coppola e i macaron di &quot;Marie Antoinette&quot;\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/H-glpqeH8C8?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tCoppola credited Canonero for bringing \u201cso much style\u201d to the film, which fit neatly into the world she hoped to create with the adaptation. \u201cI wanted to make this period film feel alive and fresh and not like an academic historical piece,\u201d explained Coppola, who came to the project after having directed the critically acclaimed films <em>The Virgin Suicides<\/em> and <em>Lost in Translation. <\/em>\u201cI knew that Milena would help me make what I had in mind and bring a fresh eye to this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThey also had a strong bond to lean on, built from knowing each other for decades. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI met Milena when I was 11 or 12 years old on my father\u2019s film <em>The Cotton Club<\/em>. I would always love to come to the studio after school and see what they were making,\u201d said the filmmaker, referencing her legendary father, Francis Ford Coppola, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/francis-ford-coppola-pays-tribute-to-werner-herzog-venice-1236354479\/\">who is also here in Venice<\/a>. \u201cI spent a lot of time in the costume department because it was always magical. Milena had an atelier. She was making all these incredible costumes, and that\u2019s such a beautiful film and a great memory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tCanonero has won three Oscars, for Stanley Kubrick\u2019s <em>Barry Lyndon<\/em>, Hugh Hudson\u2019s <em>Chariots of Fire <\/em>and Wes Anderson\u2019s <em>The Grand Budapest Hotel.<\/em> Coppola is in Venice for unveiling of her first documentary, <em>Marc by Sofia<\/em>, about fashion designer Marc Jacobs. \u201cI wanted to make a portrait of my friend of 30 years, designer Marc Jacobs, and show his creative process, connecting his inspiration and references to future generations,\u201d Sofia offered by way of an official director\u2019s statement about the film, which is described as an \u201cintimate, unconventional portrait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tCartier\u2019s masterclass presentations in Venice roll on through the festival with upcoming conversations featuring Sergio Castellitto with screenwriter Margaret Mazzantini, Alfonso Cuar\u00f3n with cinematographer Michael Seresin, and Jane Campion with producer Tanya Seghatchian.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As Oscar winning costume designer Milena Canonero faced the tall task of creating the looks for Sofia Coppola\u2019s Marie Antoinette, the filmmaker happened to arrive in Italy with a gift from France. \u201cWe decided to make own costumes, and not rent them.
