They all came together for a kinetic night of fashion at Dover Street Market downtown on Thursday, Sept. 4, for the release of Flipper\u2019s, a new line of skating and clubbing clothes by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/liberty-ross\/\" id=\"auto-tag_liberty-ross_1\" data-tag=\"liberty-ross\">Liberty Ross<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSurrounded by Dover Street\u2019s wares \u2014 exalted avantgarde luxury clothes by Comme des Gar\u00e7ons, Margiela, Phoebe Philo and more, with exalted prices to match \u2014 were roller girls and boys decked out in Flipper\u2019s shorts, slip-sliding through designer racks with their serving trays of canned Gin &amp; Juice like something out of a 60\u2019s outdoor movie with a hip-hop twist. \u00a0Not your usual clothing launch; you rarely see a reasonably priced sporting line (with most items ranging from $200 to $500) in this kind of store.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThen again, not everyone\u2019s Liberty Ross. The famed British model was discovered at age 13 by Mario Testino, and has appeared in many issues of <em>Vogue<\/em>, walked many runways and been the face of Givenchy. Not to mention her grandfather\u00a0was Lord Killearn, and her father, Ian \u201cFlipper\u201d Ross, founded pirate radio with his creation of Radio Caroline, changing the tune of British radio \u2014 British music itself \u2014 forever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThese days, the U.K. transplant and her husband, mega-mogul producer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/jimmy-iovine\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jimmy-iovine_1\" data-tag=\"jimmy-iovine\">Jimmy Iovine<\/a> (co-creator with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/dr-dre\/\" id=\"auto-tag_dr-dre_1\" data-tag=\"dr-dre\">Dr. Dre<\/a> of billionaire dollar headphones brand Beats), are active art collectors and philanthropists. But Ross\u2019s true passion? Roller skating. \u201cAsk any of the serious skaters here,\u201d she said at the release soiree of the line that she has planned for years, with input from business partner Usher. \u201c<em>Why <\/em>do you love skating?\u2019 \u2014 they\u2019ll say one word: <em>freedom<\/em>.\u201d A purposeful choice of words from a woman named Liberty?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tShe and Iovine built a full rollerskating rink in their home, a sort of private club where they welcome mostly VIP friends and skater pals. \u201cIt\u2019s really about community,\u201d explains Ross. \u201cThough people come over, see it and say, \u2018I thought I\u2019d seen everything in L.A.: in-house theaters, basketball or tennis courts \u2014 but never a roller rink!\u2019 My favorite date with my husband is skating. We have so much fun. We feel like five-years-olds. Skating is like the fountain of youth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe party really got cooking with the arrival of Iovine\u2019s megawatt music pals, including Dre, plus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/benny-blanco\/\" id=\"auto-tag_benny-blanco_1\" data-tag=\"benny-blanco\">Benny Blanco<\/a>, Swizz Beats, will.i.am, all imbibing Gin &amp; Juice. Also in attendance were Liberty\u2019s fashion friends RSVP\u2019d, as well as her brother, Atticus Ross, Oscar-winning co-composer, with Trent Reznor, of numerous soundtracks including <em>The<\/em> <em>Social Network<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tPiles of her colorful, nostalgic coffee table book <em>Flipper\u2019s Roller Boogie Palace<\/em> sit on shelves. It tells the story of her dad \u201cFlipper\u201d Ross and his notorious Hollywood club of the same name, which burned hot and fast for just three years, 1979 to 1981 \u2014 the same duration of another cult club Studio 54. Flipper\u2019s Boogie Palace at LaCienega and Santa Monica was also <em>the<\/em> A lister\u2019s night spot of its time, the roller disco home of the trendy (including a young Laura Dern), many in glitter hot pants ready for the rowdy rink.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOn Thursday, waiters and skaters wear Flipper\u2019s pieces, as, naturally, does Ross: the line\u2019s black net tunic, cropped-tube top, to which she added black leggings and six-inch tight black boots, your not-so-average skater punk\/rocker chic, with some requisite goth eyeshadow for cool measure. \u201cEverything\u2019s about layering,\u201d she explains. \u201cYou can wear Flipper\u2019s on wheels or not, it works with everything. The skating community has really taken to it. I\u2019m so close with them all now,, after doing Flipper\u2019s pop-up rinks all over we\u2019ve created (New York\u2019s Rockefeller Center, London, the Hollywood Palladium). So the clothes have been a very natural evolution. First, we put out our book in Dover Street in 2021. Then we did the Hollywood Palladium pop up, NYC, London. I actually got Rockefeller Center to \u201clend\u201d us their ice rink, which we covered \u2014 I don\u2019t know how I pulled it off for two summers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tNow, following international pop-ups, a book, the clothing line, would Ross and husband Iovine build a permanent L.A. roller rink, in addition to their own?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI never expected to do a clothing line or any of this,\u201d she laughs. \u201cSo, maybe. Skating is clearly in my blood. And for some reason, it\u2019s always been a minority sport. I\u2019m trying to change that, champion it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAcross the store, we spy some super cool pro-skater gal friends donning Flipper\u2019s best piece: the Night Spin Crop nylon bomber ($257), looking like something straight out of a Loewe campaign. A re-do of her parents\u2019 1979 original roller skates design is already selling at Dover and Flipper\u2019s website: blue suede, red laces ($500).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cMany many skaters all have my number,\u201d Ross laughs. \u201cThey come and stay with me; I invite the whole community over to skate every month. Our rink events are like L.A.\u2019s best kept secret \u2014 an amazing sound system. Skating a moving meditation. I say: \u201cless scroll, more roll!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tYeah, it would be hard, yacking on an iPhone while you\u2019re roller skating. Social media was hardly a distraction in 1979. Clearly, skating at that time was the distraction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cA lot of what we do is reimagining, rehashing what my parents did. The graphics, the iconography. I\u2019m so honored to do the launch here \u2014 my favorite store in the world.
