Dan Tana, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/dan-tana-dead-dan-tanas-restaurant-former-owner-1236346131\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">died Aug. 16 at 90<\/a>, opened his eponymous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/west-hollywood\/\" id=\"auto-tag_west-hollywood_1\" data-tag=\"west-hollywood\">West Hollywood<\/a> Italian restaurant in 1964 and established the warm service that became a calling card.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBorn in Belgrade, Tana played pro soccer in Canada before moving to the U.S. to pursue acting. While honing his craft, he landed gigs at L.A. restaurants Miceli\u2019s and La Scala. Tana\u2019s own spot took over for the former Dominick\u2019s on a stretch of Santa Monica Boulevard that was not yet the nightlife destination it would become. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBusiness was slow until a 1966 <em>L.A. Times <\/em>review deemed it the \u201cbest new Italian restaurant in the city.\u201d Popularity also increased during the \u201970s with the prominence of nearby music venue the Troubadour, as performers like Elton John and the Eagles \u2014 whose \u201cLyin\u2019 Eyes\u201d was inspired by nights at Dan Tana\u2019s \u2014 would frequent it after shows.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   size-large alignnone lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:1296px\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  \">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((730\/1296)*100%);\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption  lrv-u-padding-tb-025\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"a-font-secondary-s lrv-u-margin-r-025\">Dan Tana\u2019s<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"a-font-accent-uppercase-xs lrv-u-color-grey-dark\">AaronP\/Bauer-Griffin\/GC Images<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cHe didn\u2019t make it as an actor, but he certainly got to hang out with them,\u201d Alison Martino, a longtime friend of the restaurant who runs its Facebook page, tells<em> The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>. Indeed, the eatery\u2019s comforting red-sauce fare and casual feel helped endear it to famous regulars Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Frank Sinatra and Jack Nicholson, to name a few. In 1999, James Woods sung its praises to <em>THR<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSome menu items are named after special guests, like the veal Milanese \u00e0 la <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/george-clooney\/\" id=\"auto-tag_george-clooney_1\" data-tag=\"george-clooney\">George Clooney<\/a>, who hosted his 2006 post-Oscars party at Dan Tana\u2019s. \u201cIt feels like you walked right into the moment it was conceived,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/cameron-diaz\/\" id=\"auto-tag_cameron-diaz_1\" data-tag=\"cameron-diaz\">Cameron Diaz<\/a> told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/dan-tanas-turns-50-secrets-735026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>THR<\/em> in 2014<\/a> about its unchanged look.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tTana dabbled in film producing, and his name inspired Robert Urich\u2019s moniker, Dan Tanna, on <em>Vega$<\/em>, a series produced by Dan Tana\u2019s fan Aaron Spelling.
