I don\u2019t believe in fate. Lives aren\u2019t set in stone; there\u2019s no such thing as \u201cin the stars.\u201d <\/p>\n

I wasn\u2019t destined to write this, and you probably weren\u2019t destined to read it. We\u2019ve either brought ourselves here or been thrown together by random chance \u2014 author and reader. And yet, I\u2019m still thinking and writing about it, and you\u2019re still reading it. Maybe this constant musing about fate and predetermination, making art about this unprovable rule, is just what keeps us sane, helps us feel important or noticed by the vast universe. <\/p>\n

In art, all events are predetermined. There can be forces beyond humans. Sisters can be marked for death. Lovers can doom themselves to tragedy. Authors and artists become arbiters of fate. They give us the chance to indulge in realities where prophecies can be realized, where the stars can be aligned. I don\u2019t believe in fate, but there\u2019s something thrilling about the fiction of it all.<\/p>\n

Here, eight writers have been strung together by their shared fascination with the stars, exploring \u2014 whether real or imaginary \u2014 the many forms fate may take.<\/p>\n
