37D. A department head is a manager. Shortened to match dept. head in the clue, the solution is MGR.<\/p>\n

Today’s Theme<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Going back to the joke from earlier, INTERRUPTINGCOW was today\u2019s theme. Each themed entry featured one word spread across two clues, \u201cinterrupted\u201d by a cow-derived product. <\/p>\n

For example, OPPO-BEEF-SITES was formed by OPPOSITES (1-Across and 9-Across) interrupted by BEEF. That same rule applied to TRADED spread across 25-Across and 31-Across, with Leather in the middle. LAB-CHEDDAR-LED (LABLED, as clued in 45-Across), and STORY-MILK-TIME (STORYTIME, as clued in 66-Across) were the other clued entries.<\/p>\n
