University Ave. location on Friday, Oct. 31, as real estate firm<a href=\"https:\/\/www.landmarkproperties.com\/\"> Landmark Properties<\/a> prepares to build <a href=\"https:\/\/www.landmarkproperties.com\/landmark-properties-acquires-galleria-mall-in-ann-arbor-michigan\/\">The Metropolitan<\/a>, a new high-rise apartment building, at the site. The store officially announced its closure Oct. 24 with a sign posted to its doors. Starbucks is one of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/business\/galleria-mall-businesses-including-pinball-petes-to-move-due-to-new-high-rise-development\/\"> several businesses<\/a> closing in the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/galleria-mall-ann-arbor\"> Ann Arbor Galleria Mall<\/a> \u2014 including<a href=\"https:\/\/pancheros.com\/locations\/?gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=10445263098\"> Pancheros Mexican Grill<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinballpetes.org\/\"> Pinball Pete\u2019s<\/a> \u2014 to make way for the new high-rise.<\/p>\n<p>The Metropolitan will be an 18-story building featuring about 5,200 square feet of retail space and 241 units of student housing. In an email to The Michigan Daily,\u00a0 a Landmark Properties spokesperson wrote the building will primarily be for residential use but acknowledged a possibility for Starbucks to return to the property.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve had productive conversations with Starbucks and remain open to welcoming them back to The Metropolitan,\u201d the spokesperson wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The closure of the 1214 S. University Ave. location marks the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/business\/starbucks-on-main-and-liberty-to-close\/\">second<\/a> Ann Arbor Starbucks to close in recent years, following the Main and East Liberty Street location\u2019s closure in October 2023. Two Starbucks \u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/Restaurant_Review-g29556-d12631682-Reviews-Starbucks-Ann_Arbor_Michigan.html\"> one<\/a> located on State Street and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/starbucks-ann-arbor-19\"> another<\/a> in the Ross School of Business \u2014 remain in downtown Ann Arbor.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>In an interview with The Daily, Taubman junior Lucy Martin, a former employee of the South University Avenue Starbucks, said she is frustrated by the closure and worries additional pressure will be placed on workers at the State Street location.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cState Street employees are going to have the worst day of their lives every single day, because South U. is shutting down,\u201d Martin said. \u201cI am kind of irritated just because Starbucks is selling out one of their locations and creating another issue for one of their other ones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin further explained how transferring employees to the State Street location would be difficult, both because of the number of employees and because the State Street location is<a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/ann-arbor\/four-ann-arbor-starbucks-locations-vote-to-unionize-bringing-state-total-up-to-five\/\"> unionized<\/a> but the South University Avenue location was not.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey told us we can get rehoused into State Street,\u201d Martin said. \u201cBut, first of all, State Street can\u2019t just absorb 30 other workers. That\u2019s not how that works. But also, if you move to State Street, you were automatically entered into the union there, which, you know, some people didn\u2019t like unions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with The Daily, Business junior Alexa Crociata, who frequently spent time at the South University Avenue Starbucks, said she was sad about the closure and how unexpected it was.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-2    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI thought the closure was kind of abrupt,\u201d Crociata said. \u201cI was really sad about it, just because it\u2019s definitely been a familiar, comforting space for me and my friends to study. I think losing it is honestly like losing a small, steady part of my college life.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Crociata further said she will miss the community the businesses on South University Avenue brought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the shops that are closed down are daily lived-in spaces that made campus feel like more of a community,\u201d Crociata said. \u201cI think it\u2019s really hard to replace something that already matters to people. I also think there are enough apartments already.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Apartment complexes currently in the South University area include<a href=\"https:\/\/www.livethelandmark.com\/\"> Landmark<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zplaceapartments.com\/\"> Z Place<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/verveannarbor.com\/\"> Verve<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sterlingarborblu.com\/?switch_cls[id]=98235&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=20405343992&amp;gbraid=0AAAAAp-XWIDiCGfp4CgacV7tkruy9E4lA&amp;gclid=CjwKCAiA2svIBhB-EiwARWDPjvAEtKJiRYeOvKfoqG-i-sthOdTpcJ5uE3hsAYQ-JxkRplMCH1kepxoCnVYQAvD_BwE\">Sterling Arbor Blu<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thevicvillagenorth.com\/\"> Vic Village North<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thevicvillagesouth.com\/\"> Vic Village South<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/livesix11.com\/\"> Six11<\/a>. Martin said she does not welcome new high-rise housing developments, believing them to exacerbate<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/news\/ann-arbor\/2025\/06\/some-of-the-highest-rent-ann-arbors-lack-of-affordability-under-scrutiny.html\"> cost-of-living issues<\/a> in the city.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that the high-rises are hurting Ann Arbor,\u201d Martin said. \u201cThey\u2019re creating a lot of housing that nobody can afford in Ann Arbor, because the high-rises are priced so ridiculously that an average student can\u2019t afford it. So not only are they knocking down businesses that students actually like and use, they\u2019re then replacing them with something that the majority of the student population can\u2019t take advantage of.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-3    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>In an interview with The Daily, Brett Lenart, planning manager for the city of Ann Arbor, said the development could help the city reach its carbon neutrality <a href=\"https:\/\/www.a2gov.org\/sustainability-innovations-home\/carbon-neutrality-home\/\">goals<\/a> by allowing students to walk to campus, instead of driving or riding the bus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a great opportunity and a great location for housing, and it also meets a lot of the city\u2019s sustainability goals,\u201d Lenart said. \u201cThe city aspires to be a carbon-neutral community by 2030 and a big part of that is finding ways that people can exist in our community (with)\u00a0 a lower carbon footprint.
