She was 84.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFranz died Nov. 4 at her home in Woodbury, Connecticut, after a battle with cancer, her husband, screenwriter Christopher Pelham, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/11\/14\/theater\/elizabeth-franz-dead.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a> <em>The New York Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFranz also landed Tony noms in 1983 and 2002, respectively, for portraying Kate Jerome (Matthew Broderick\u2019s mom) in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/neil-simon-dead-odd-couple-748670\/\">Neil Simon<\/a>\u2019s <em>Brighton Beach Memoirs<\/em> and the youngest of four sisters (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/piper-laurie-dead-twin-peaks-hustler-carrie-1235618677\/\">Piper Laurie<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/frances-sternhagen-dead-sex-and-the-city-cheers-tony-winner-1235698546\/\">Frances Sternhagen<\/a> and Estelle Parsons were her siblings) in a revival of Paul Osborn\u2019s <em>Morning\u2019s at Seven<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tPlus, she sparkled \u2014 and won an Obie Award in 1980 \u2014 for her performance as the strict nun in Christopher Durang\u2019s <em>Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All for You<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFranz and Dennehy had started out with <em>Death of a Salesman<\/em> at the Goodman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/theater-0\/\" id=\"auto-tag_theater-0_1\" data-tag=\"theater-0\">Theater<\/a> in Chicago before they arrived on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/broadway\/\" id=\"auto-tag_broadway_1\" data-tag=\"broadway\">Broadway<\/a> at the Eugene O\u2019Neill in February 1999.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tRather than play Linda Loman as a beaten-down wife, Franz took a far more assertive, outraged approach and added an element of sexuality to the role.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cYou can say anything because you know in the end you\u2019re going be in that bed, curled up and having the most wonderful conversations,\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1999\/05\/09\/theater\/theater-i-have-a-lot-of-willy-lomans-in-my-life.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a> the <em>Times<\/em> in 1999. \u201cWhen she\u2019s curled up in his arms and she\u2019s singing to him \u2014 you can\u2019t tell me that isn\u2019t a very sexual moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMiller, who won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1949 for the play, praised Franz in the <em>Times<\/em> piece, saying that she \u201chas discovered in the role the basic underlying powerful protectiveness, which comes out as fury, and that in the past, in every performance I know of, was simply washed out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tShe and Dennehy \u2014 who also won a Tony for his work \u2014 then appeared in a 2000 production for Showtime, with both receiving Emmy nominations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tElizabeth Jean Frankovitch was born on June 18, 1941, in Akron, Ohio. Her father, Joseph, worked in a tire factory in town, and her mother, Harriet, was a part-time waitress who was mentally ill and would disappear for months at a time, she told the <em>Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tShe graduated from Copley High School in Ohio and from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York in 1962, appeared often in summer productions at the Dorset Playhouse in Vermont and made it to Broadway for the first time in 1967 in Tom Stoppard\u2019s <em>Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAfter working with Simon in <em>Brighton Beach Memoirs<\/em>, he hired her to step in for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/linda-lavin-dead-alice-broadway-actress-1236095539\/\">Linda Lavin<\/a> as the strong-willed Kate in 1987 in <em>Broadway Bound<\/em>, the third play in his autobiographical \u201cEugene Trilogy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFranz had auditioned for the role of Linda opposite Dustin Hoffman in the 1984 Broadway revival of <em>Death of a Salesman<\/em> (Kate Reid was hired) and played the part alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/hal-holbrook-dead-actor-who-played-twain-lincoln-and-deep-throat-728371\/\">Hal Holbrook<\/a> in a touring production before teaming up with Dennehy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFrank also appeared on Broadway in <em>The Cherry Orchard<\/em>, <em>The Octette Bridge Club<\/em>, <em>The Cemetery Club<\/em>, <em>Getting Married<\/em>, <em>Uncle Vanya<\/em> and, in 2010, <em>The Miracle Worker<\/em>. She said that when she was hired for a role, she would write \u201ca novel\u201d about her character.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHer onscreen r\u00e9sum\u00e9 included the films <em>Sabrina<\/em> (1995), <em>The Secret of My Success<\/em> (1987), <em>Jacknife<\/em> (1989), <em>School Ties<\/em> (1992), <em>The Substance of Fire<\/em> (1996) and <em>Christmas With the Kranks<\/em> (2004) and guest-star TV turns on <em>Dear John<\/em>, <em>Roseanne<\/em>, <em>Sisters<\/em>, <em>Gilmore Girls<\/em>, <em>Law &amp; Order: SVU<\/em> and <em>Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn addition to Pelham, survivors include her brother, Joe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHer first husband was prolific character actor Edward Binns (<em>12 Angry Men<\/em>, <em>North by Northwest<\/em>, <em>Fail Safe<\/em>).
