{"id":3908,"date":"2025-12-02T20:49:25","date_gmt":"2025-12-02T20:49:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2025\/12\/02\/openai-data-center-planned-for-farmland-in-saline\/"},"modified":"2025-12-02T20:49:32","modified_gmt":"2025-12-02T20:49:32","slug":"openai-data-center-planned-for-farmland-in-saline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2025\/12\/02\/openai-data-center-planned-for-farmland-in-saline\/","title":{"rendered":"OpenAI data center planned for farmland in Saline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Less than a half-hour away from the University of Michigan in Saline Township,<a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/\"> OpenAI<\/a> \u2014 parent company of<a href=\"https:\/\/chatgpt.com\/\"> ChatGPT<\/a> \u2014 and tech giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oracle.com\/\">Oracle<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.related-digital.com\/news\/openai-oracle-and-related-digital-announce-stargate-data-center-site-in-michigan\"> <\/a>have plans to develop a $7 billion data center. In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.related-digital.com\/news\/openai-oracle-and-related-digital-announce-stargate-data-center-site-in-michigan\">announcement<\/a> Oct. 30, the companies said\u00a0the development is set to supply 4.5 gigawatts to<a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/announcing-the-stargate-project\/\"> Stargate<\/a> to help advance artificial intelligence infrastructure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The partnership is one of many data centers rumored to be coming to Michigan, including the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/ann-arbor\/stop-the-data-center-organizes-assembly-to-discuss-winter-action-plan\/\"> controversial partnership<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/administration\/ypsilanti-residents-protest-umich-data-center-construction\/\">between<\/a> the University and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lanl.gov\/\">Los Alamos National Laboratory<\/a> to bring a near 300,000 square-foot data center to Ypsilanti. Since the facility is intended for research purposes and not as infrastructure for website data or cloud storage, the University has <a href=\"https:\/\/research.umich.edu\/research-at-michigan\/lanl\/\">requested<\/a> the Ypsilanti center be referred to as a high-performance computing center instead of a data center. Despite<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wxyz.com\/news\/saline-township-residents-set-to-protest-massive-data-center-project\"> community pushback<\/a> centered around fears of an inflated cost of living and potential environmental impact, the facility is expected to break ground on approximately 250 acres in early 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Gretchen Whitmer celebrated the Saline data center in her Oct. 30<a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/whitmer\/news\/press-releases\/2025\/10\/30\/whitmer-on-stargate-announcement-from-openai-oracle-related-digital-creating-thousands-of-jobs\"> press release<\/a>, citing the more than 2,500 jobs the facility will generate during construction, along with additional 450 permanent on-site jobs and 1,500 jobs within the community. In addition to being the largest economic project in state history, developer<a href=\"https:\/\/www.related-digital.com\"> Related Digital<\/a> will invest $14 million into local fire departments, a farmland preservation trust and a community investment fund, per the request of the Saline Township Board, according to the press release.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Residents and environmentalists have reservations regarding the development.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>For an LSA junior who has lived in Saline\u2019s neighboring township of York their entire life, and requested to remain anonymous due to fear of retribution, the lack of transparency regarding the data center is the biggest area of concern. The student will be referred to as Blake in this article. In an interview with The Daily, Blake said they would like to see more information regarding the data center\u2019s functionality and potential environmental impact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do believe this could be done right, but it would have to be done environmentally consciously,\u201d Blake said. \u201cI want more education on things like what a closed-loop system is, what data centers do, how they\u2019re supplied.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Blake also said they are concerned about how Saline, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salinehistory.org\/salines-history-1\">historically<\/a> known as a small farm town with a relatively small population, would adjust to the influx of people. They also raised concerns about the potential for an inflated cost of living in Saline, especially within Ann Arbor\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/news\/ann-arbor\/2025\/06\/some-of-the-highest-rent-ann-arbors-lack-of-affordability-under-scrutiny.html\">existing issues<\/a> regarding affordability.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI worry about if Saline has the infrastructure and housing necessary to support it,\u201d Blake said. \u201cI worry it could lead to disastrously high prices and push the housing bubble even higher. I do know (Ypsilanti) is relatively affordable, but Ann Arbor has become increasingly unaffordable in recent years. I\u2019ve also noticed Saline has evolved along with it to also become unaffordable in some pockets. I\u2019m worried that it would affect that township and the city and then the county as a whole.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with The Daily, Engineering senior Param Nayar, who is involved in advocating for sustainability, said the biggest way data centers impact the communities surrounding them is their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eesi.org\/articles\/view\/data-centers-and-water-consumption\">resource use<\/a> \u2014\u00a0 namely water and energy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-2    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201c(Data centers) need pipes of water that go in around these computing systems and keep them cool, and that water usually becomes steam and escapes into the atmosphere,\u201d Nayar said. \u201c(Energy and water) are both scarce resources, and especially energy is a polluting resource, so it can really impact the environment.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Many residents near data centers also <a href=\"https:\/\/planetdetroit.org\/2025\/10\/data-center-costs-michigan-hearing\/\">worry<\/a> about higher utility bills resulting from the 2.2 million square-foot data center. Michelle Martinez, inaugural director of the Tishman Center for Social Justice and the Environment, told The Daily in the last five years, electricity costs have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/graphics\/2025-ai-data-centers-electricity-prices\/?embedded-checkout=true\">increased<\/a> 267% per month in areas close to significant data center activity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(There are) examples all over the country where energy prices have ballooned because of (the) data centers increase in energy consumption and the associated infrastructural build-out necessary to support and sustain those consumption levels,\u201d Martinez said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Related Digital claims residents will not see an impact on their rates and<a href=\"https:\/\/planetdetroit.org\/2025\/11\/dte-energy-saline-data-center\/\"> DTE Energy requested<\/a> that contracts be fast-tracked through an ex-parte process. The process would eliminate the opportunity for a public hearing, which is currently<a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/mpsc\/commission\/events\/2025\/12\/03\/u-21990-dte-electric-special-contracts-public-hearing\"> scheduled<\/a> for Dec. 3. Martinez said she is concerned the ex-parte process would prevent residents from understanding how the data center will affect them directly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDTE Energy requested an ex-parte proceeding before the Michigan Public Service Commission, which essentially exempts them from public interface, submitting records that would allow a procedural process for intervention,\u201d Martinez said. \u201cBy skipping that part, we actually are disallowed from knowing or substantiating some of the claims that they\u2019ve made in the media that this new OpenAI facility in Saline would be beneficial to rate payers.
