Now, Chase, 82, is opening up about the memory problems he\u2019s since faced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn the upcoming documentary, <em>I\u2019m Chevy Chase and You\u2019re Not, <\/em>which premieres New Year\u2019s Day on CNN, Chase\u2019s daughter, Caley Chase, recalled the scary experience. \u201c[He] has basically come back from the dead,\u201d she said. \u201cHe had heart failure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tChase\u2019s wife, Jayni Chase, also recalled that time in their family\u2019s life. \u201cHe couldn\u2019t explain to me what was wrong. So, we go to the ER. His heart stops,\u201d she remembered. \u201cDuring those years he was drinking, he got cardiomyopathy; when the heart muscles get weaker, and they can\u2019t pump as much blood out with each beat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tChase was then put into a coma for eight days, according to his friend Peter Aaron.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThe doctor had warned us: \u2018We might not get him back. We don\u2019t know how present he\u2019ll be. Prepare yourselves for the worst,\u201d Caley added. \u201cHe woke up, all he could do was use his voice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFollowing the coma, Chase took a long time to \u201creorient himself,\u201d Aaron described. To help Chase with cognitive improvement, they played chess and cards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBut ever since then, he\u2019s had trouble remembering things. \u201cI feel like his memory gaps come from that incident,\u201d Aaron said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tChase added, \u201cAccording to the doctors, my memory would be shot from it. That\u2019s what\u2019s happened here.\u201d He also said he doesn\u2019t remember controversial moments from his past, when asked about on-set clashes, such as those while filming <em>Community.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m fine now,\u201d Chase said. \u201cIt\u2019s just that it affects your memory, the doctors have told me that. So, I have to be reminded of things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAmong many things, Chase is known for being a part of <em>SNL<\/em>\u2018s season one cast. But when the sketch comedy series celebrated its 50th anniversary in February, and viewers wondered why Chase was present but didn\u2019t go on stage with his former cast members.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tChase finally addressed how \u201cupsetting\u201d that was. \u201cThis is probably the first time I\u2019m saying it. But I expected that I would\u2019ve been on the stage too with all the other actors,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen Garrett [Morris] and Laraine [Newman] went on the stage there, I was curious as to why I didn\u2019t. No one asked me to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI did bring it up once in a text to Lorne [Michaels] and then took it back. I said, \u2018OK, I take it back, silly.\u2019 But it\u2019s not that silly. Somebody\u2019s made a bad mistake there. I don\u2019t know who it was, but somebody made a mistake,\u201d he continued. \u201cThey should\u2019ve had me on that stage.
