But at Sani, an ultra-luxe five-hotel complex on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/greece\/\" id=\"auto-tag_greece_1\" data-tag=\"greece\">Greece<\/a>\u2019s Kassandra Peninsula, some well-heeled guests are choosing to forage for their food, find shelter in a cave and build fires by rubbing sticks together. It\u2019s a paradox of our times, one well suited for a <em>White Lotus<\/em> subplot: the world\u2019s wealthiest travelers are among those most avidly preparing to survive the apocalypse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tTo be fair, Sani also boasts all the usual trappings high-end travelers have come to expect, including suites with gardens and private pools, and spas with an extensive menu of massages, facials, wraps and beach therapies. But today\u2019s one-percenter vacationers have come to expect more than just pristine beaches and high thread counts. <em>Experiences <\/em>are the ultimate luxury, and Sani offers them in spades thanks to an impressive slate of celebrity collaborations. Among them are tennis classes taught by Rafael Nadal, a soccer program for kids run by Britain\u2019s Chelsea Football Club, and Sani Gourmet, a gastronomy series that this year drew Michelin-starred chefs led by Daniel Boulud. (\u201cI was impressed that the culinary team at Sani was able to source all the exotic ingredients that the chefs requested,\u201d said Boulud.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tPerhaps the most surprising of these offerings, considering the cushiness of the surroundings, are the daily courses in primitive wilderness endurance, led by bushwhacking reality TV stalwart <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/bear-grylls\/\" id=\"auto-tag_bear-grylls_1\" data-tag=\"bear-grylls\">Bear Grylls<\/a>\u2019 Survival Academy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThere is a new clientele to the outdoor industry; it ramped up during COVID, and our call outs tripled,\u2019\u2019 said Anna Humphries, development and logistics manager for the academy, and one of the program\u2019s trainers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHumphries says the pandemic led many wealthy people to contemplate doomsday scenarios and attempt to prep for them by attempting feats of endurance and deprivation. They often discovered how ill-suited they were to adventure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cA lot of people don\u2019t know what they are doing, so mountain rescues also tripled and were higher than they had ever been before,\u2019\u2019 reported Humphries. \u201cPeople were genuinely trying to do things they had never done.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   size-large alignnone lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:1000px\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  \">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((666\/1000)*100%);\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption  lrv-u-padding-tb-025\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"a-font-secondary-s lrv-u-margin-r-025\">Sani Resort<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"a-font-accent-uppercase-xs lrv-u-color-grey-dark\">Sani Resort<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAt Sani, the guests who take these classes are sometimes like fish out of water. \u201cWe have had people show up in Gucci shoes with nice jeans and a jacket,\u2019\u2019 sighed Humphries. \u201cIt\u2019s always quite entertaining, but some of these guests just don\u2019t have scruffy clothes.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSani has tapped into something most high-end resorts don\u2019t provide: an offering for successful people who feel increasingly dependent on technology and out of touch with nature, incapable of basic self-sufficiency.\u00a0Humphries was alarmed to find how many people that describes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cIf I walked out of my house tomorrow and randomly talked to people, I don\u2019t think I could find one who knew survival skills,\u2019\u2019 she said. \u201cPeople go out on hikes using Google Maps. What would happen if their phones died?\u00a0Parents say they don\u2019t know what they would do if they took their kids on a hike and got lost, and they are afraid that they, and their children, can\u2019t do anything without tech. We support and teach these people what to do.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/bear-grylls-interview-becoming-xtraordinary-1235499548\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bear Grylls<\/a>, who has visited Sani personally, is finding a new clientele among the one percent worldwide, including families who fly from sunny South Africa on private jets to an ice strip landing in Antarctica, eager to learn how to survive in the harshest environment on the planet, with its ice caves, glaciers and blizzards.
