{"id":4423,"date":"2026-01-29T12:50:19","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T12:50:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2026\/01\/29\/journalist-anna-narinskaya-discusses-incarcerated-director-zhenya-berkovich-in-poetic-voices-from-a-russian-prison\/"},"modified":"2026-01-29T12:50:21","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T12:50:21","slug":"journalist-anna-narinskaya-discusses-incarcerated-director-zhenya-berkovich-in-poetic-voices-from-a-russian-prison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2026\/01\/29\/journalist-anna-narinskaya-discusses-incarcerated-director-zhenya-berkovich-in-poetic-voices-from-a-russian-prison\/","title":{"rendered":"Journalist Anna Narinskaya discusses incarcerated director Zhenya Berkovich in \u2018Poetic Voices from a Russian Prison\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>On Wednesday afternoon, the<a href=\"https:\/\/ii.umich.edu\/crees\"> Center for Russian, East European, &amp; Eurasian Studies<\/a> hosted Anna Narinskaya, a Russian journalist and activist, at Weiser Hall for \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/ii.umich.edu\/crees\/news-events\/events.detail.html\/142741-21891320.html\">Poetic Voice from a Russian Prison: Zhenya Berkovich and her Striking Protest<\/a>.\u201d The lecture focused on<a href=\"https:\/\/pen.org\/writer-at-risk\/zhenya-berkovich\/\"> Zhenya Berkovich<\/a>, a Russian director and playwright<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/russia-playwright-theater-director-sentenced-prison-terrorism-zhenya-berkovich\/\"> sentenced to prison in 2024<\/a> by the Russian government on charges of \u201cjustifying terrorism\u201d in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside playwright Svetlana Petriychuk, Narinskaya co-produced \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/mediacentre\/proginfo\/2024\/51\/finist-the-bright-falcon\">Finist the Bright Falcon<\/a>,\u201d a documentary style play describing Berkovich\u2019s initial arrest in 2023. The play, based on a modern retelling of a <a href=\"http:\/\/freebooksforkids.net\/fenist-the-falcon.html\">Russian folktale<\/a>, depicts Russian women choosing to leave for Syria to marry Islamic State militants after meeting them online. First performed in 2021, the play received two<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Golden_Mask_(Russian_award)\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bolshoirussia.com\/performance\/GoldenMaskFestival\/\">Golden Mask awards<\/a>, the most prestigious theatre prize in Russia, in 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In her presentation, Narinskaya said Berkovich gained popularity during the beginning of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/russia-invades-ukraine-biden-condemns-unprovoked-and-unjustified-military-aggression\/\">Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust starting maybe half a year before the beginning of the full-scale invasion, she started regularly writing poetry and posting it on Facebook,\u201d Narinskaya said. \u201cAnd this poetry became \u2026 incredibly popular, which is not very often the case with poetry. I was, at that point, in Moscow, and I would go to the underground and sit in cars, and people would always read Zhenya\u2019s poem from his or her phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>In an interview with The Michigan Daily<em>, <\/em>Narinskaya said Berkovich\u2019s arrest was politically motivated and an attempt by the Russian government to send a message to other artists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the showcase, that she is in prison,\u201d Narinskaya said. \u201cThe government wanted to show the people in theatre and broader people in the arts in Russia that you can\u2019t contradict the authorities, even in a metaphorical way. So, your narrative should always be in sync with what the government is saying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Narinskaya said Russian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2024\/08\/07\/russia-repressive-laws-used-crush-civic-freedoms\">repression<\/a> under Russian President Vladimir Putin caused people to feel alienated and turn to art.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t understand how lonely it could be,\u201d Narinskaya said. \u201cYou\u2019re kind of on your own, because you look, and everybody is very happy, everybody trusts Putin, and everybody is saying that everything he does is okay. So people of this state of mind look to art to reflect their feelings \u2014 and that\u2019s very important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, Narinskaya explained that art provided catharsis for Russians that is otherwise inaccessible.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-2    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been told by many people, including foreigners, that the response that art was having, including poetry but theatre as well, in pre-big war Russia \u2014 it was no comparison with any other country,\u201d Narinskaya said. \u201cPeople would come to the theater and cry because they would see something kind of metaphorically representing their despair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with The Daily, CREES Director Elizabeth King emphasized poetry\u2019s longstanding role as a form of resistance in Russian history. \u201cI think the significance of poetry and literature \u2014 Russian poetry, Russian literature \u2014 the significance of that tied with politics and repressive society historically has been there in Russia and the Soviet Union,\u201d King said. \u201cAnd the significance of poets, of writers and of artists and their relationship \u2014 or rather, resistance \u2014 to regimes is quite powerful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Narinskaya also discussed writing letters to prisoners, which Rackham student Tyler Berndt wrote he appreciated in an email to The Daily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRussian political prisoners are often kept in solitary confinement, and in these situations letters from the outside world are their only connection,\u201d Berndt wrote. \u201cFor those who study this region, we are often racking our brains trying to think of ways to help those who have been subject to unjust imprisonment, and writing letters is a small but practical way to make a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Narinskaya reiterated to The Daily the importance of Berkovich\u2019s work and her refusal to stop advocating for what she believed.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-3    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWhen we look at how the world changes and look at the politics all over the world, I think we need people like Zhenya everywhere,\u201d Narinskaya wrote. \u201cPeople who will not bend. People who will not say what the government says, who have guts to protest in horrible circumstances, people who disagree, people who challenge the politics of those in power.
