On March 10, Ypsilanti resident Miguel Rosas Ruiz was intercepted<\/a> by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement<\/a> officers on Carpenter Road in Ypsilanti while on his way to work. He was detained<\/a> and is being held at North Lake Processing Center<\/a> in Baldwin, Michigan.<\/p>\n Rosas is a father of four and the owner of Rosas Painting, an Ypsilanti-based painting business he founded in 2003. He immigrated to the United States from Mexico in 2001. In an interview with The Michigan Daily, Rosas Ruiz\u2019s daughter Morelia Rosas Martinez said her father\u2019s detainment caused emotional distress to the family.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s been a moment of a lot of sadness, a lot of anger for the things that are happening not only to us and to my dad in there but also to many, many people, as we know,\u201d Rosas Martinez said. \u201cHe was there for us all the time, and I think my brother deserves to have his father there for all of his things as well. \u2026 I think on the emotional level, it\u2019s impacted us the most.\u201d<\/p>\n Rosas Ruiz was granted a release on bond at his hearing <\/a>at the Detroit Immigration Court<\/a> April 15, meaning he can be released once his bond is paid. Rosas Ruiz petitioned the United States District Court for the Western District of Michigan<\/a>, challenging the legality of his detention, and on April 9, the court conditionally granted the petition, arguing that Rosas Ruiz\u2019s detention violates his Fifth Amendment<\/a> rights to due process.<\/p>\n
