New Jersey announced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/devils\/news\/ethan-edwards-signs-elc-release-3-25-25\">signing<\/a> Tuesday, inking Edwards to a two-year, entry-level contract that begins next season. This makes Edwards the third Wolverine defenseman in three years to sign with the Devils.<\/p>\n<p>Edwards was the 120th overall selection in the fourth round of the 2020 NHL Draft by New Jersey. In the ensuing four seasons, he played an integral role for Michigan, anchoring its defense while tallying 55 points in 129 games. Edwards was both a leader on and off the ice, serving two years as an alternate captain for the Wolverines.<\/p>\n<p>This season, Edwards became synonymous with Michigan\u2019s identity. As the Wolverines\u2019 top defenseman, he averaged over 24 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.collegehockeynews.com\/stats\/overall.php\">minutes<\/a> of ice time per game, playing more than anyone else on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.collegehockeynews.com\/stats\/team\/Michigan\/31\">roster<\/a>. He showed up in big moments as well, providing two assists in a nail-biting win against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/sports\/ice-hockey\/michigan-wins-goaltender-duel-over-michigan-state-2-1\/\">Michigan State<\/a> and a game-winning goal in overtime against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/sports\/ice-hockey\/second-period-momentum-fuels-overtime-win-over-minnesota-3-2\/\">Minnesota<\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>Edwards\u2019 departure is Michigan\u2019s first this season, and potentially its most impactful loss. While the Wolverines struggled to find quality ice time from their defenseman, coach Brandon Naurato was able to rely on Edwards. However, Naurato no longer has that luxury, and must look toward returners and future additions to patch that gap.<\/p>\n<p>Now with the Comets, Edwards will have time to further develop his talents, and potentially have the chance to join former teammates Luke Hughes and Seamus Casey with the Devils.
