Jayapal talk Medicare for All at U-M town hall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Ann Arbor residents gathered in the Modern Languages Building Saturday afternoon for a healthcare <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobilize.us\/abdulforsenate\/event\/949125\/\">town hall<\/a> featuring U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash. The event was moderated by Aaron McCormick, president of the <a href=\"https:\/\/minurses.org\/\">Michigan Nurses Association<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Jayapal has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/member\/district\/pramila-jayapal\/J000298\">represented<\/a> Seattle in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2017 and has introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/jayapal.house.gov\/2021\/03\/17\/medicare-for-all\/\">significant<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/jayapal.house.gov\/2025\/04\/29\/jayapal-sanders-dingell-hundreds-of-health-care-workers-introduce-medicare-for-all\/\"> legislation<\/a> aiming to broadly expand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/medicare\">Medicare<\/a> \u2014 which currently covers Americans 65 and older and those with certain disabilities \u2014 to cover all Americans. El-Sayed co-authored the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/52617340-medicare-for-all\">book<\/a> \u201cMedicare for All: A Citizen\u2019s Guide,\u201d which has since become one of El-Sayed\u2019s campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/abdulforsenate.com\/\">slogans<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>El-Sayed is running against state Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcmorrowformichigan.com\/\">Mallory McMorrow<\/a>, D-Royal Oak, and U.S. Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/haleyformi.com\/\">Haley Stevens<\/a>, D-Mich., in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/polls\/michigan-us-senate-election-polls-2026.html\">closely contested<\/a> Democratic primary <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Michigan_elections,_2026\">election<\/a> on Aug. 4. Both McMorrow and Stevens <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/michigan-government\/medicare-for-all-divides-democrats-in-michigans-us-senate-race\/\">support<\/a> creating a public healthcare option alongside private insurance. El-Sayed has long <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michiganpublic.org\/politics-government\/2018-06-06\/el-sayed-releases-details-of-medicare-style-michicare-health-plan\">advocated<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5481251\/\">single-payer<\/a> coverage, a state-run universal health care plan which would entirely replace private health insurance. Jayapal said El-Sayed\u2019s campaign shows promise for candidates in the 2026 and 2028 elections who aim to expand Medicare to the entire population.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to have to have the White House, the Senate and the House, but we have a new moment,\u201d Jayapal said. \u201cWe have a real opportunity here, and we should not let this go to waste because this may be our moment to actually get this done, and that\u2019s what I\u2019m hearing across the country, and I think that\u2019s what Abdul is hearing across the state.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>During the town hall, El-Sayed criticized private health insurance providers, claiming they intentionally take advantage of patients.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll health insurance companies are essentially parasites,\u201d El-Sayed said. \u201cYou pay so that you get the healthcare you need when you need it, only to find out that you\u2019ve got a deductible standing in your way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>El-Sayed referenced ongoing contract negotiations between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uofmhealth.org\/\">Michigan Medicine<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcbsm.com\/\">Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan<\/a> as an example of insurance companies restricting access to care. If an agreement is not reached by July 1, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox2detroit.com\/news\/standoff-between-michigan-medicine-blue-cross-blue-shield-michigan-threatening-coverage\">over<\/a> 200,000 Michigan Medicine patients would no longer receive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthinsurance.org\/glossary\/in-network\/\">in-network<\/a> care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI bet for a lot of you, if you\u2019re insured on Blue Cross Blue Shield and you get healthcare at Michigan Medicine, you are on the chopping block,\u201d El-Sayed said. \u201cI don\u2019t think parasites should exist in healthcare, which is exactly what Medicare for All would do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to a 2025\u00a0 Pew Research Center <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2025\/12\/10\/most-americans-say-government-has-a-responsibility-to-ensure-health-care-coverage\/\">study<\/a>, 35% of Americans supported a national single-payer health insurance system and 31% supported a mix of government programs and private insurance. Cost estimates for a Medicare for All program <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33491150\/\">vary<\/a> significantly, and potential tax <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbo.gov\/system\/files\/2022-05\/57973-single-payer.pdf\">increases<\/a> are a concern for many. El-Sayed said\u00a0 Medicare for All is feasible if enough people take collective action and organize around the issue.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-2    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cPeople ask me, \u2018Is it ever going to happen in my lifetime?\u2019\u201d El-Sayed said. \u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018Listen, if you decide that you want it to happen, if we decide collectively that we\u2019re going to work to make it happen, it can happen.\u2019 Things don\u2019t just happen in our politics; people make them happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with The Michigan Daily, El-Sayed said frustration over healthcare costs has affected Americans\u2019 trust in medical institutions as a whole.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf your whole goal is to pick my whole back pocket, why should I trust you on anything?\u201d El-Sayed said. \u201cI think it\u2019s important for us to understand that the economics of healthcare, as they are, have undercut trust in the science of healthcare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with The Daily, Jayapal said other candidates aiming to expand Medicare need to combine ambitious goals with specific and practical plans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got an opportunity to remind people that they don\u2019t need to think small \u2014 they can actually think big about what is necessary for them to be able to thrive,\u201d Jayapal said. \u201cThat\u2019s exciting when we start talking about it, and when we have candidates like Abdul who are willing to actually go into the details of how we can do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-3    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>In an interview with The Daily, LSA rising junior Bill Lewis, press assistant for El-Sayed\u2019s campaign, said he believes El-Sayed\u2019s platform provides hope for younger voters with a rising\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/hub.jhu.edu\/2026\/02\/09\/snf-agora-political-divides-generations\/#:~:text=The%20findings%20show%20that%20younger%20respondents%20express%20deeper%20dissatisfaction%20with%20how%20the%20political%20system%20functions.%20They%20trust%20political%20parties%20less%2C%20believe%20the%20system%20needs%E2%80%AFsignificant%20change%2C%E2%80%AFand%E2%80%AFmay%20be%20more%20open%20to%E2%80%AFusing%E2%80%AFviolence%E2%80%AFin%20political%20conflicts.%E2%80%AF\">distrust<\/a> in the political system.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we have young people who are turning more and more towards the right or towards extreme points of view, a lot of people scratch their heads and wonder as to why,\u201d Lewis said. \u201cBut to me it\u2019s clear that it\u2019s because we had grown up in a democracy that\u2019s sort of dysfunctional, and what Abdul is doing is reaching out to those people directly and saying \u2018It doesn\u2019t have to be this way.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Summer News Editor Niko Wilson can be reached at <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/government\/senate-candidate-abdul-el-sayed-and-rep-pramila-jayapal-discuss-medicare-for-all-at-u-m-town-hall\/mailto:nikow@umich.edu\"><em>nikow@umich.edu<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<aside>\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p><h3 class=\"jp-relatedposts-headline\"><em>Related articles<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ann Arbor residents gathered in the Modern Languages Building Saturday afternoon for a healthcare town hall featuring U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and Rep.
