While negotiations to finalize the contract are on-going, both parties have agreed to continue <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthinsurance.org\/glossary\/in-network\/\">in-network<\/a> coverage for Michigan Medicine\u2019s academic medical center and other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uofmhealth.org\/our-care\/specialties-services\">specialized<\/a> facilities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Michigan Medicine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/administration\/michigan-medicine-sets-deadline-for-blue-cross-blue-shield-of-michigan-contract-negotiations\/\">told<\/a> BCBSM administrators March 2 that it would cease negotiations for maintaining <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthinsurance.org\/glossary\/in-network\/\">in-network<\/a> care if a contract agreement was not reached by the current contract\u2019s June 30 expiration date. Prior to Wednesday\u2019s announcement, BCBSM <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcbsm.com\/updates\/member-message\/\">advised<\/a> over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilx.com\/2026\/05\/07\/blue-cross-advises-members-find-new-doctors-amid-michigan-medicine-contract-talks\/\">250,000<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uofmhealth.org\/\">Michigan Medicine<\/a> patients to seek care from an alternate provider as negotiations with hospital staff <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/administration\/michigan-medicine-and-blue-cross-blue-shield-negotiations-continue-to-stall-as-thousands-are-told-to-find-a-new-provider\/\">stalled<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the press release for the tentative agreement, Michigan Medicine CEO David Miller wrote he is grateful to allow BCBSM patients to continue receiving care at the state\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/health.usnews.com\/best-hospitals\/area\/mi\">top-rated<\/a> hospital.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOn behalf of our physicians, nurses and all of our team members, we are grateful to have reached an agreement that ensures continued access for our patients and for Blue Cross members across the state to the world-class care available at Michigan Medicine,\u201d Miller wrote.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the same statement, Tricia A. Keith, president and CEO of BCBSM, wrote the agreement would preserve access to care at the hospital system without significantly raising healthcare costs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBlue Cross is pleased to reach this long-term agreement with our partners at Michigan Medicine \u2013 ensuring continued access to the system\u2019s medical care services for our members, while advancing the affordability of their care and coverage,\u201d Keith wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agreement was primarily held up by disagreements over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arorishealth.com\/blog\/understanding-insurance-reimbursement-rates\/\">reimbursement rates<\/a>. Michigan Medicine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michiganmedicine.org\/news-release\/michigan-medicine-resists-significant-cuts-blue-cross-blue-shield-michigan-would-limit-patient\">claimed<\/a> the insurance provider proposed a 30% rate decrease, while BCBSM <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcbsm.mibluedaily.com\/affordability\">claimed<\/a> the hospital system asked for a 44% increase. Michigan Medicine will continue to meet with BCBSM representatives in coming weeks to finalize the contract\u2019s terms.
