{"id":5381,"date":"2026-06-02T05:49:06","date_gmt":"2026-06-02T05:49:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2026\/06\/02\/ann-arbor-business-owners-say-construction-is-deterring-customers\/"},"modified":"2026-06-02T05:49:10","modified_gmt":"2026-06-02T05:49:10","slug":"ann-arbor-business-owners-say-construction-is-deterring-customers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2026\/06\/02\/ann-arbor-business-owners-say-construction-is-deterring-customers\/","title":{"rendered":"Ann Arbor business owners say construction is deterring customers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From<a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/ann-arbor\/ann-arbor-construction-wolverine-village-and-south-u-high-rises\/\"> high-rise apartments<\/a> to<a href=\"https:\/\/engage.a2gov.org\/ingalls-kingsley\"> water<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dteenergy.com\/us\/en\/quicklinks\/search\/gas_map.html?utm_campaign=semi%20gas%20renewal%20program%20rgp&amp;utm_medium=search&amp;utm_source=google-ads&amp;utm_content=gas%20renewal%20program&amp;utm_channel=paid%20search&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=23585451965&amp;gbraid=0AAAAA9oY-U-hAtLXIzpcjC-Qron6dClKc&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwuO_QBhAWEiwAIkVhU8cIXVOJhWKfHXpwRKWTpTeJca0na6PTzdLasUl_fnxSnhJRJoYbixoC0y8QAvD_BwE\"> gas line<\/a> replacements, Ann Arbor is no stranger to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/ann-arbor\/students-deal-construction-complications\/\">lengthy construction projects<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/a2-mi.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/instant\/exhibit\/index.html?appid=f2690e096e31488990aac007851a5a38\">Closures<\/a> of many of the city\u2019s roads and sidewalks has not only created additional obstacles for pedestrians, but is placing strain on some of Ann Arbor\u2019s businesses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In downtown Ann Arbor, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.a2dda.org\/people-friendly-streets\/projects\/fourth-avenue\/\">transit infrastructure project<\/a> has torn up the asphalt of South Fourth Avenue, East William Street and East Washington Street. In an interview with The Michigan Daily, Laura Horwath, owner of<a href=\"https:\/\/ferneboutique.com\/pages\/ferne-ann-arbor?srsltid=AfmBOoqTq125ufmDJvAR09-v_nD4qu3y8p-ucxIf1pJgoQFKC0oxc7K7\"> Ferne Boutique<\/a>, said she believes the ongoing construction eliminates and undermines the small business appeal that draws people downtown.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think it can definitely deter people from coming here,\u201d Horwath said. \u201cI just think so many of the businesses downtown are independently owned; that\u2019s the charm of coming here. So when you see a bunch of streets closed, you might not want to park and walk around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Horwath said navigating around the construction sites has been particularly challenging, and communication from city officials has been poor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think that there is just a lack of communication about the projects,\u201d Horwath said. \u201cNow that they\u2019ve started, we are having to react to them instead of, months ago, proactively, we could have been talking about ways to market coming here.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kaylan Mitchell, owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/getupvintage.com\/?srsltid=AfmBOopxIRj9SVbVxuvlQoInftu0m7aa_9bWrkpandz26_bQs5uogAOl\">The Getup Vintage<\/a>, told The Daily she believes the city could have done a better job planning the volume of construction projects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s a lot happening right now. I\u2019m a local; I\u2019m downtown every day, and it still catches me by surprise,\u201d Mitchell said. \u201cI do think that the city could have done a little better in planning. We don\u2019t need to do six different projects at the same time.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an interview with The Daily, Hank Nettels, manager of<a href=\"https:\/\/olympiaskateshop.com\/?srsltid=AfmBOorwP2bHLsLu_RyNHz7pUYIRp-S5JEKLMZ4ukhgPJTCaUv15kcU3\"> Olympia Skate Shop<\/a>, also expressed frustration at the city\u2019s lack of communication regarding construction.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey have not been very communicative as to what they\u2019ve closed\u201d Nettels said. \u201cMyself and other businesses on this block just want a little communication as to what\u2019s going on.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-2    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the intersection of South University Avenue and Church Street, private apartment development projects have turned the busy intersection into a maze of fencing and shipping container tunnels. On the 1200 block of South University Avenue, one project has flattened<a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/business\/galleria-mall-businesses-including-pinball-petes-to-move-due-to-new-high-rise-development\/\"> several<\/a> popular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/business\/galleria-mall-businesses-including-pinball-petes-to-move-due-to-new-high-rise-development\/\">businesses<\/a> and closed the entire block to vehicle traffic. In an interview with The Daily, Matthew Caplan, co-owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.playabowls.com\/location\/ann-arbor\">Playa Bowls<\/a>, said he has noticed a decrease in non-student patrons due to the ongoing construction.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPeople don\u2019t have a place to park, and it\u2019s made it difficult to drive in that area\u201d, Caplan said. \u201cIt really eliminates our non-student or off-campus customer base \u2026 they don\u2019t want to have to deal with the headache of parking or driving\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an interview with The Daily,<a href=\"https:\/\/order.snackpass.co\/Quickly-Boba-Cafe-Ann-Arbor-1220-S-University-Ave-5fe0ea1037e52e00da1666bb\"> Quickly Boba<\/a> co-owner Jay Zheng said he feels the road closures have caused a decrease in both in-person and online orders.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe do notice less sales, even online,\u201d Zheng said. \u201cWe usually do really well on DoorDash and Uber Eats online, but with the construction, (it\u2019s) difficult for drivers to park and pick up food items, and it\u2019s very inconvenient for visitors to visit that side of town.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Caplan said the construction has also cut off the store\u2019s utilities multiple times.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-3    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey have cut gas lines; they have cut electrical lines,\u201d Caplan said. \u201cDuring construction, they knocked our power out on more than one occasion. It\u2019s made it an inconvenience for us when we\u2019ve not been able to operate because of the construction\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an email to The Daily, LSA rising junior Ana Cano, Playa Bowls employee, wrote construction has made her work commute longer and less predictable.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEarlier in the year when the Diag was under construction it made my commute much longer since I had to go entirely around campus instead of through it,\u201d Cano wrote. \u201cThere were also constant changes to the routes that were open so it was hard to gauge how long my commute to work would be and how to fit that around my busy schedule.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an interview with The Daily, Amanda Debek, owner of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseofchimneycakes.com\/ann-arbor\"> House of Chimney Cakes Caf\u00e9<\/a> on South Fourth Avenue, said Ann Arbor should be compensating businesses whose sales are impacted by city construction projects.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve already reached out to the city for some sort of business compensation because it has affected us,\u201d Debek said. \u201cI don\u2019t find it fair to the small business owners.
