{"id":5387,"date":"2026-06-02T09:49:03","date_gmt":"2026-06-02T09:49:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2026\/06\/02\/charles-holmes-recommended-for-dean-of-school-of-public-health\/"},"modified":"2026-06-02T09:49:07","modified_gmt":"2026-06-02T09:49:07","slug":"charles-holmes-recommended-for-dean-of-school-of-public-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2026\/06\/02\/charles-holmes-recommended-for-dean-of-school-of-public-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Charles Holmes recommended for dean of School of Public Health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The University of Michigan <a href=\"https:\/\/record.umich.edu\/articles\/charles-holmes-recommended-as-next-school-of-public-health-dean\/\">announced<\/a> Thursday that <a href=\"https:\/\/cigh.georgetown.edu\/people\/charles-holmes-md-m-p-h\/#\">Charles Holmes<\/a>, physician-scientist and U-M alum, has been recommended to serve as the next dean of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sph.umich.edu\/\">School of Public Health<\/a>. Holmes\u2019 five-year term will begin on July 1, pending approval from the University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/regents.umich.edu\">Board of Regents<\/a> at its June 25 meeting. He will succeed interim dean <a href=\"https:\/\/sph.umich.edu\/faculty-profiles\/lisabeth-lynda.html\">Lynda Lisabeth<\/a>, an epidemiologist who has filled the position since last June.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Holmes is currently a professor at the Georgetown University <a href=\"https:\/\/meded.georgetown.edu\/\">School of Medicine<\/a> and director of Georgetown\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cigh.georgetown.edu\/\">Center for Innovation in Global Health<\/a>. Holmes previously served on the Biden-Harris <a href=\"https:\/\/wgetsnaps.github.io\/biden-harris-transition-teams\/index.html\">Transition Agency Review Team<\/a> for International Development, and as an advisor to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gatesmri.org\/about-us\/\">Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Medical Research Institute<\/a>, expanding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/charles-holmes-md-mph-fidsa-96485578\/\">access<\/a> to tuberculosis and malaria treatment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Provost Laurie McCauley, executive vice president for academic affairs, told the University Record Holmes brings experience across multiple sectors of public health.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCharles Holmes returns to Michigan with a rare view of public health\u2019s full reach, from clinical care and research to national policy and global implementation,\u201d McCauley said. \u201cHe understands that public health efficacy is measured by the strength of the evidence and, crucially, by whether that evidence reaches people, shapes systems and improves lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Holmes received a Master of Public Health in epidemiology and international health from the School of Public Health in 1994. In the announcement, Holmes said his time at the University has played an important role in his healthcare education.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMichigan played a formative role in my own development in public health, and I have long admired the school\u2019s excellence in teaching, research, interdisciplinary collaboration and public service,\u201d Holmes said. \u201cI\u2019m grateful to everyone involved in the search process for their confidence and partnership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The School of Public Health is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/best-graduate-schools\/top-health-schools\/public-health-rankings\">ranked<\/a> among the top five in the nation, and the dean oversees the school\u2019s administration, budget, undergraduate and graduate programs.
