{"id":5467,"date":"2026-06-12T08:49:03","date_gmt":"2026-06-12T08:49:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2026\/06\/12\/uaw-endorses-el-sayed-benson-in-michigan-races\/"},"modified":"2026-06-12T08:49:07","modified_gmt":"2026-06-12T08:49:07","slug":"uaw-endorses-el-sayed-benson-in-michigan-races","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2026\/06\/12\/uaw-endorses-el-sayed-benson-in-michigan-races\/","title":{"rendered":"UAW Endorses El-Sayed, Benson in Michigan Races"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uaw.org\">The United Auto Workers<\/a>, a Detroit-based union representing more than <a href=\"https:\/\/uaw.org\/about\/\">400,000<\/a> workers nationwide, <a href=\"https:\/\/uaw.org\/uaw-endorses-secretary-jocelyn-benson-and-dr-abdul-el-sayed-in-critical-michigan-races-for-governor-and-u-s-senate\/\">endorsed<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/abdulforsenate.com\/\">Abdul El-Sayed<\/a> in the Democratic primary for Michigan\u2019s open U.S. Senate seat \u2014 vacated by retiring Sen. Gary Peters \u2014 in a statement Friday. The UAW also endorsed incumbent Michigan Secretary of State <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jocelynbenson.com\/\">Jocelyn Benson<\/a> in the state\u2019s gubernatorial race.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El-Sayed currently faces state <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcmorrowformichigan.com\/\">Sen. Mallory McMorrow<\/a>, D-Royal Oak, and U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/stevens.house.gov\">Rep. Haley Stevens<\/a> in the primary race. In their endorsement, the UAW wrote they believe El-Sayed is the ideal candidate to fight for workers rights in Washington, D.C, citing El-Sayed\u2019s campaign focus on not accepting any money from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/press\/resources-journalists\/political-action-committees-pacs\/\">corporate Political Action Committees<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUAW members in Michigan want a fighter in Washington, D.C. who isn\u2019t afraid to push forward a strong working-class agenda with moral clarity,\u201d the statement read. \u201cHaving never taken a dime from corporate PACs, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed is someone we can trust to have our backs, including when we need it most \u2013 like come May Day 2028. From Medicare for All to banning stock buybacks, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed is ready, eager, and well-equipped to move our core issues in the U.S. Senate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UAW endorsement carries particularly heavy weight in Michigan, where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerscu.org\/blog\/insights-on-michigans-automobility-industry\">one in five jobs<\/a> belong to the auto industry. Michigan manufactures <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michiganbusiness.org\/industries\/mobility-and-automotive-manufacturing\/#:~:text=Michigan%20is%20home%20to%20nearly%2019%25%20of%20all%20U.S.%20auto%20production%2C%20more%20than%20any%20state%20in%20the%20nation.\">more cars<\/a> than any other state in the nation, and more than <a href=\"https:\/\/abdulforsenate.com\/2026\/06\/uaw-endorses-dr-abdul-el-sayed-for-michigans-open-u-s-senate-seat\/\">300,000<\/a> Michigan auto workers belong to the union.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a press release, El-Sayed said he is proud to stand with the American middle class and highlighted his refusal of corporate money.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMichigan union autoworkers built the American middle class and proved that when people stand together, there\u2019s nothing we can\u2019t accomplish,\u201d El-Sayed said. \u201cUnlike campaigns powered by corporate PAC money, AIPAC, and Washington insiders, our campaign is built alongside workers and union members. Together, we\u2019re going to take on corporate greed, rebuild an economy that works for working people, strengthen collective bargaining, and ensure that the future of Michigan manufacturing is built right here by union workers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In their statement, the UAW also endorsed Benson for Michigan governor. The UAW referenced Benson\u2019s experience as Michigan Secretary of State as reason for the endorsement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMore than ever, we need to elect a leader in Lansing that stands alongside the UAW against corporate interests \u2013 and we know what side Jocelyn Benson is on,\u201d the statement read. \u201cAs Secretary of State, Jocelyn Benson has proved she\u2019s not afraid to stand up against the most powerful billionaires in the name of working-class Michiganders across the state. UAW members need that kind of energy in Michigan\u2019s Capitol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JocelynBenson\/status\/2062894890032259329\">post<\/a> to X Friday, Benson wrote she is appreciative of the UAW endorsement and proud to have the organization\u2019s support.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-2    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe @UAW put Michigan \u2014 and the world \u2014 on wheels,\u201d Benson wrote. \u201cAs governor, I\u2019ll fight with them to lower costs, raise wages, and protect every community.
