From the surreal landscapes of the Samorost series to the mechanical wonder of Machinarium and the chaotic charm of Chuchel, the Czech studio has built a reputation for creating games that feel handcrafted in every sense of the word. Their newest release, Phonopolis, continues this tradition while pushing past previous boundaries.

Phonopolis is a story-driven puzzle adventure set within a city governed by an authoritarian figure known only as Leader. Players step into the shoes of Felix, an unassuming garbage collector whose ordinary life is interrupted when he discovers a pair of headphones capable of blocking the messages from city-wide “amplions.” Through these devices, essentially loudspeakers, Leader broadcasts subliminal commands that keep the population obedient in pursuit of the supposedly perfect society.

At once, Phonopolis is both a quirky, simple mystery and a reflection on individuality, conformity and the dangers of sacrificing humanity in pursuit of perfection. As Felix uncovers the truth behind Leader’s obsession with achieving the “Absolute Tone,” he finds himself responsible for protecting a city that may not even realize it needs saving. Despite its dystopian premise, Phonopolis never becomes overwhelmingly bleak. Its themes are grounded and relatable, but they are presented with warmth, optimism and an earnest belief in the value of imperfection.

The game’s most striking achievement is undoubtedly its visual design. Phonopolis uses 3D graphics — the first of Amanita Design’s games to do so. Unlike most modern games, however, its world began as a physical creation. Amanita Design constructed large portions of the city from cardboard and fiberboard before digitizing them into the game. The result is unlike anything else currently available. Buildings are elaborate paper models brought to life, with textures retaining the subtle imperfections and tactile qualities of real handcrafted materials.

That handcrafted philosophy extends beyond the game’s visuals and into its sound design. Composer Tomáš Dvořák, better known as Floex and a longtime collaborator with Amanita Design, once again delivers a soundtrack perfectly attuned to the game’s world. The music carries a nostalgic, dreamlike quality that makes Phonopolis feel like an old film. This lo-fi atmosphere was created by running portions of audio through older recording equipment — including a cassette player — to introduce imperfections and textures that are difficult to create digitally. The subtle hiss, distortion and worn-in quality are lovingly authentic and make both the game and city undeniably lived-in.

Joe Acheson, known from his band Hidden Orchestra, voices Felix and much of the supporting cast, altering his performance through changes in pitch, tone and characterization rather than using a large ensemble. The result gives the game the feeling of a fairy tale being told aloud. Combined with Floex’s textured soundtrack, the voice work becomes another piece of the game’s carefully crafted atmosphere.

Equally lovely to the human voices are the human hands behind the project, erecting each level’s diorama and plotting every puzzle. As intended by Amanita, the game resembles a giant interactive toy box, filled with playful shapes and inviting details awaiting player input. This design helps to strike an impressive balance between accessibility and challenge, with puzzles clearly communicating what they want from the player. The difficulty lies not in interpreting what the puzzle wants, but determining how to realize an intuitive goal. The game’s visual language helps immensely; it is wonderfully obvious what can be clicked, pushed, pulled, twisted or manipulated, which keeps the focus on problem-solving rather than frustrating pixel hunting, a common plight of puzzle games.

What ultimately makes the game memorable, however, is the sincerity behind every aspect of its design. The world of Phonopolis radiates creativity and optimism even while exploring serious themes. It celebrates individuality without becoming cynical, and it presents resistance without descending into despair. Phonopolis is a beautiful achievement — a game where you can feel the human love and care poured into every corner, nook and cranny. Its art is breathtaking, its puzzles are thoughtfully designed and the story delivers a heartfelt message without sacrificing hope. In an industry increasingly dominated by larger and larger productions and eager to outsource creative labor to generative Artificial Intelligence, Phonopolis stands out by embracing something simpler: the joy of making something by hand and inviting others to play with it.

Daily Arts Summer Senior Editor Estlin Salah can be reached at essalah@umich.edu.

Related articles

For over two decades, Amanita Design has been one of the most beloved names in point-and-click adventure games.
