Petrowski has served as the associate vice president and deputy general counsel in the <a href=\"https:\/\/ogc.umich.edu\/\">Office of the Vice President and General Counsel<\/a> since 2014, and will replace Timothy G. Lynch, who recently <a href=\"https:\/\/news.stanford.edu\/stories\/2026\/07\/timothy-g-lynch-new-general-counsel\">accepted<\/a> a position as vice president and general counsel for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stanford.edu\/\">Stanford University<\/a>. Petrowski\u2019s general counsel term will begin Aug. 26.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two-year appointment awaits approval from the University\u2019s Board of Regents. In the press release announcing the appointment, Board Chair Michael J. Behm (D) wrote Lynch has navigated a series of complex legal affairs since the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/uncategorized\/sacua-discusses-compliance-universitys-general-counsel\/\">beginning<\/a> of his tenure in 2013.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c(Lynch\u2019s) deep legal expertise, professionalism, and steady leadership have helped guide the university through some of its most consequential moments at a particularly challenging time for higher education,\u201d Behm wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Petrowski\u2019s experience with the OVPGC includes providing legal guidance for policy surrounding University research and administrative actions \u2014 such as issues related to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/laws-and-policy\/civil-rights-laws\/title-ix-and-sex-discrimination\">Title IX<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/laws-and-policy\/civil-rights-laws\/title-vi\/education-and-title-vi\">Title VI, <\/a>federal research <a href=\"https:\/\/research.umich.edu\/fed-research-blog\/\">guidelines<\/a> and compliance with federal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/media\/document\/university-of-michigan-section-117-investigation-letter-july-2025-110399.pdf\">orders<\/a> on higher education.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pending regent approval, Petrowski will enter her appointment amid several ongoing University affairs requiring legal counsel, including U-M athletics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/sports\/college\/university-michigan\/wolverines\/2026\/07\/08\/paige-shiver-lawsuit-university-michigan-public-records-sherrone-moore\/90737233007\/?gnt-cfr=1&amp;gca-cat=p&amp;gca-uir=true&amp;gca-epti=z119568p118850l002950c118850e1148xxv119568d--xx--b--xx--&amp;gca-ft=192&amp;gca-ds=sophi\">investigations<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/government\/doj-indicts-eight-pro-palestine-activists-after-fbi-raids-sparking-community-protests\/\">indictment<\/a> of pro-Palestine student activists and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/news-briefs\/ypsilanti-township-proposes-water-moratorium-that-could-block-planned-umich-data-center\/\">development<\/a> of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/administration\/top-umich-officials-sit-down-with-the-daily-to-discuss-planned-ypsi-data-center\/\">data center<\/a> in Ypsilanti Township.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the press release, Petrowski wrote that representing the University as general counsel is a critical role for protecting access to higher education.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs a first-generation college graduate, I have experienced firsthand the transformative power of higher education,\u201d Petrowski wrote. \u201cThat experience motivates my commitment to advancing the University of Michigan\u2019s mission and building on the remarkable momentum Tim and our team have created together.\u201d<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Summer News Editor Kylie Harmala can be reached at <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/administration\/grasso-announces-two-year-appointment-of-patty-petrowski-to-university-vice-president-and-general-counsel\/mailto:kharmala@umich.edu\"><em>kharmala@umich.edu<\/em><\/a><em>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<aside>\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p><h3 class=\"jp-relatedposts-headline\"><em>Related articles<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>University of Michigan President Domenico Grasso announced the two-year contractual appointment of Patty Petrowski to University vice president and general counsel Wednesday morning.
