I want to start first:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Theater became a battlefield. My tongue became a sword slathered in poison. And then my sharp tongue was dull.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After you left, the memory of you in the classroom distorted over time. False stories spread fast. This was<a href=\"https:\/\/emersonpower.wordpress.com\/2018\/04\/10\/the-nuances-of-racism-in-theatre-school\/\"> nothing<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/howlround.com\/american-theatre-was-killing-me\"> new<\/a> to us. But I know you carried a different experience. This war was<a href=\"https:\/\/howlround.com\/playwrights-color-white-directors-and-exposing-racist-policy\"> nothing<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weseeyouwat.com\/statement\"> new<\/a> to you, either.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually, you faded into the background noise.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And I was suffocating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hostility rose between classmates; betrayal hung in the air. Bitter rivalries took center stage during rehearsals. Our theater teacher\u2019s favoritism remained unwavering, and the Thespian Council President held the crown. Her deference to the white students was <a href=\"https:\/\/tonyapinkins.medium.com\/why-i-am-fed-up-with-performative-activism-from-white-and-black-theater-makers-d46564ec94fe\">nothing<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.7stages.org\/the-privilege-of-theatre-artistry-2\/\"> new<\/a> to us.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Friends became foes. Friends stabbed each other in the back. They lied, praising scenes they had already torn apart backstage. And among their cliques, they whispered malicious words.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">False stories spread fast \u2014 I\u2019ve lost count of the rumors I\u2019ve heard. I can\u2019t remember all the menacing words I used to retaliate. I can\u2019t differentiate between what was true and what wasn\u2019t. Reality became false to me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And I failed at staying away from their drama.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-2    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I couldn\u2019t resist drinking in their poison; you would have told me not to get involved, but I felt violent and wicked,<a href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/Olivia-rodrigo-begged-lyrics\"> overwhelmed and underfed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I <em>bit<\/em> back.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many years have passed, and I\u2019ve kept replaying the scenes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve written millions of narratives about this since. If I write everything down, maybe I can rationalize the past. Maybe I can move on. Yet nothing I\u2019ve said has satisfied me, and my nightmares keep making me relive the memories.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m sorry if I struggle to tell you the full story. The words still catch in my throat when I speak.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-3    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our recent trip to the park has given me some time to think:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don\u2019t know why I\u2019ve kept finding myself back in that battlefield.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe the drama wasn\u2019t as debilitating as we thought it was \u2014 as <em>I <\/em>thought it was.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In my childlike mind, I kept trying to break the memories apart, trying to understand what happened. The things that, at the moment, felt so huge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But sitting beside you, years later, I realized our lives continued, whether I was ready for it or not.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-4    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The theater is gone now. The rumors are quieter.
