{"id":5809,"date":"2026-07-16T08:49:03","date_gmt":"2026-07-16T08:49:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2026\/07\/16\/david-miller-will-depart-post-to-lead-vanderbilt-health\/"},"modified":"2026-07-16T08:49:06","modified_gmt":"2026-07-16T08:49:06","slug":"david-miller-will-depart-post-to-lead-vanderbilt-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2026\/07\/16\/david-miller-will-depart-post-to-lead-vanderbilt-health\/","title":{"rendered":"David Miller will depart post to lead Vanderbilt Health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Michigan Medicine CEO David Miller will leave his post at the University of Michigan to become the CEO of Vanderbilt Health and Dean of <a href=\"https:\/\/medschool.vanderbilt.edu\/\">Vanderbilt University School of Medicine<\/a>, according to a Michigan Medicine <a href=\"https:\/\/record.umich.edu\/articles\/david-miller-to-lead-vanderbilt-health-after-distinguished-service-at-michigan-medicine\/\">press release<\/a> posted Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Miller has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michiganmedicine.org\/news-release\/new-ceo-starts-today-michigan-medicine\">served<\/a> as Michigan Medicine\u2019s CEO since July 2025 after the resignation of his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/administration\/it-is-the-ultimate-betrayal-umich-and-ann-arbor-community-reflects-on-impacts-of-end-to-gender-affirming-care\/\">predecessor<\/a> Marschall S. Runge, and has been the president of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uofmhealth.org\/\">U-M Health<\/a> since January 2021. He will remain in his post until Dec. 1, 2026, and begin his position at Vanderbilt on Jan. 1, 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Miller\u2019s departure marks the latest episode in a series of leadership shake-ups at the University over the last year, including the University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/news-briefs\/university-president-elect-kent-syverud-steps-down-due-to-cancer-diagnosis\/\">ongoing<\/a> search for a new president, and the resignations of the University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/administration\/grasso-announces-two-year-appointment-of-patty-petrowski-to-university-vice-president-and-general-counsel\/\">general counsel<\/a> and the dean of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/news-briefs\/engineering-dean-resigns-takes-job-at-penn-state-university\/\">College of Engineering<\/a>. In the press release, University President Domenico Grasso praised Miller for his contributions to the institution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDavid has created a culture of trust, transparency and communication strengthening the entire organization,\u201d Grasso said. \u201cWe are deeply grateful for his steadfast leadership, his unwavering commitment to our mission and the countless contributions he has made to our patients, learners, faculty and staff.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During his tenure, Miller oversaw the construction of the $920 million <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/research\/michigan-medicine-opens-d-dan-and-betty-kahn-health-care-pavilion\/\">D. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion<\/a>, as well as the resolution of contentious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/news-briefs\/michigan-medicine-and-blue-cross-blue-shield-reach-tentative-contract-agreement-after-advising-250000-to-seek-a-new-provider\/\">health insurance<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/news-briefs\/nurses-union-reaches-tentative-contract-agreement-with-michigan-medicine\/\">union contract<\/a> negotiations with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcbsm.com\/\">Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mna-umpnc.org\/\">University of Michigan Professional Nurse Council<\/a>, respectively. He also presided over Michigan Medicine\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/news-briefs\/michigan-medicine-discontinues-gender-affirming-care-for-minors\/\">termination<\/a> of gender-affirming care for patients under the age of 19, which has sparked significant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/administration\/activists-hold-rally-outside-university-hospital-in-support-of-gender-affirming-care\/\">protest<\/a> and feelings of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/administration\/it-is-the-ultimate-betrayal-umich-and-ann-arbor-community-reflects-on-impacts-of-end-to-gender-affirming-care\/\">betrayal<\/a> among many community members.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the press release, Miller thanked Michigan Medicine community members for his time at the hospital system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis has been one of the most consequential decisions of my career,\u201d Miller wrote. \u201cMichigan Medicine has been far more than my workplace \u2014 it has been my professional home. Leaving a community that I care so deeply about is incredibly difficult.
